Well I can see why you'd think that and while it is true, I see Godrick as someone who's trying to be Godfrey very heavily, to the point he misunderstood the purpose of Godfrey's grafting to Serosh.
For Godfrey it's a means to contain himself so he wouldn't go apeshit and go full Pelinal on anything that he deems an opponent, for Godrick it's a means for strength.
Rick idolizes Frey as his home is literally filled to the brim with Godfrey related things and I don't see him as someone who'd mistreat his troops or anything like that, after all there has to be a reason why people still follow him despite him jobbing so much, a trait which he seems to have inherited through the lineage from Godfrey as he too was both one to make allies, from my vague recollection of the whole tidbits in the Mountaintops with the Zamor, so far as to have their reach go into the Peninsula below the starting area as we find one of their fellas there. There's also how Godfrey has his best pal Serosh, a foe he no doubt bested in battle becoming his amigo and limiter. He even carries Serosh's axe into battle.
Depending on what you believe the events of the world to be and how they happened, you could potentially say he even beat Radagon/Marika in a fight or his battle prowess had them swoon for him.
I believe that Godrick's one of those "I want to be him, I will try to be him, yet I will get beaten so I will keep trying and escaping and trying" types, think of Jack Hanma from Baki.
To add to this, everyone who idolizes or is born from Godfrey attains followers through battle. Godwyn? Beat the shit out of a black wyrm and now he's got a bro for life.
That fraud, hypocritical Radahn? Has tons of sycophants.
Though I admit, this idea isn't airtight exactly, but the "Underdog trying to be his idol" is what Godrick's trope seems to be and I adore that.
