I think it has to do with men just being less likely to pursue or have access to adequate help for their mental health in general (it's also shit for women though), and societal/gender stereotypes
For example I got diagnosed with bipolar, but BPD seems much more accurate for what I experience (I'm pretty sure my mom has some kind of BPD also but that's another story)
The bipolar meds don't do much for me and my mood and feelings towards things can flip like a light switch. But if I told a psych or someone about this they'd probably lol and think I was being a hypochondriac. Like other anon said, similar to how autistic girls are often not "believed" to have it
There's also the "shame" associated with it and people thinking you're nuts; it's bad enough being diagnosed with something like depression let alone the stigma of BPD, so a lot of guys suck it up
It's really shit having this lol. I've not had a proper meal today but just gonna have another cig and drink and go to bed bc I can't stand to be around anyone rn.
