Also, Joel is not this symbol of goodness and valor to begin with. He's literally a thug and husk of a man when TLOU 1 starts. He has zero compassion and sympathy. This changes slightly at the end, but it's not like he does a 180. He's still a, relatively, fucked up dude. It's been said a few times that he and Tommy had to do many fucked up things to survive both in P1 and P2. Remember the truck heist from P1? He said he used to be on the other side of that. Also he's really good at torturing people. It's like you guys didn't even play the games. He is only "good" from our perspective.
