Quite the opposite, you should be picking up G1s and G2s to gain popularity because there's a hidden mechanic where when your uma hits certain popularity benchmarks, instead of getting extra skill points her unique skill itself gains a level.
These are all in Senior year, the benchmarks are:
>Early Feb, 60,000+ fans
>Early April, 70,000+ fans
>Late Dec, 100,000+ fans
Haru Urara only needs 40k, 60k, and 80k at the same checkpoints. If your uma is 5 stars you can get the unique ability all the way up to level 6.
