Picture a big heap of stinking garbage. It seems like this is about as worthless a thing as possible, but at least it is stable.

Now imagine the garbage heap catches fire. Not only does it stink, it's an acute crisis, cannot be ignored and demands everything around it gets halted so it can be dealt with.

Finally, picture the garbage fire finally gone out, and the cooling, still stinky ashes being all that remains of a pile of worthlessness now completely inactive and growing less relevant by the minute.
