I try to hover around 8th in knockout tour. The laps go by so fast that being anywhere further back puts you at serious risk, and being further in front runs the obvious risk of being raped by items. The structure of the mode itself is a bagging deterrent which I think is great.
The hardest parts are always the last two segments. Catching whoever is in first from even 4th place can be a bitch.
