And like <10p of that a pint is profit for the pub and >90% goes to the government in some form of duty and taxes.
>Alcohol duty
>VAT
>Corporation tax
>Council business rates
>Council tax if you're a live-in landlord
>Green levies on energy bills (and VAT on top)
>Waste licences/Landfill Tax
>National Insurance for employees
>Capital Gains tax
>Road tax/Fuel duty
This applies to all the producers who supply the pubs too so before alcohol even gets to the pubs it's been taxed at every step of the way, and every step involves transporting products that is taxed further through haulage regulations like operator licencing, driver licencing and emission regulations.
Think about all the steps it takes to produce a pint, and every step of the way each company is taxed on their operations and has to adhere to arbitrary regulations like 'Green' targets and carbon reduction.
>Seed developers/producers > Haulage > Farms > Haulage > Brewery > Haulage > Wholesaler > Haulage > Pub
Then likely the vast majority of people spending money in a pub has paid NI and income tax on it before they even get to hand it over.
There was a good post I saw somewhere that tallied up the amount of tax you pay on £10 of petrol. It works out you pay more tax than £10 because of all the stealth taxes you pay. It really is just straight up theft.
