It all started off as a story about a ruined city and a bunch of people who attempt to take on an eldritch being that kills them every year, with a giant glowing number denoting the age that people will no longer live past. So once a "new year" starts and the 34 turns to 33, all 34 year olds get fucked and die. I liked the simplistic story of chapter 1 better, and most non-pseuds do too.
