We have no reason to believe this happens to lightners. If this were the case, Kris and Susie should at least show some signs of this darkness illness by now but they don't. Besides the dialogue in this video here https://youtu.be/ncGNdt92hIM?t=53 proves that the knight is wearing some sort of armor and is not corrupted by the dark.
Additionally, why couldn't Dess just go back with her family after escaping the supposed darkness? She can travel just fine in the dark and light worlds (almost too well considering how well the knight managed to restrain and carry Undyne from one part of the town to the other), so basic survival wouldn't be a problem. The knight's appearance also wouldn't be an issue considering that amalgams in undertale were set free to live with society with no issues.

Just face it. The only way for this to make sense is if Papyrus is the knight. He captured Undyne to sacrifice her to bring back Dess who died in the bunker's dark world. The player is kept away from the bunker for fear that it will be sealed and Dess will be lost for good.

Dark worlds aren't some radioactive poison. They're just areas that have negative photon readings and distort your view of the world. I don't buy it. The Holiday family has some degree of access to the shadow crystal material given that Asgore has some for himself. Its more likely that the Holidays used these crystals as weapons to give to their servants ie Papyrus and Asgore.
