This falls apart when you could potentially build a team and buy items around dealing high physical damage while reducing physical armor but metafags will tell you that you need to stack HP and base damage or something. Basically, builds can be made to synergize with one another but then redditors will insist on a meta. Obviously depends on the game and gameplay systems and depth.

Take GW2 for example. My assessment was staff elementalists in wvw would often easily apply burns and bleeds but had low vit. Carrion was the natural choice for +vit, +condition damage and +power. The meta evolved there after a few years of fierce competition where the best clans broke the meta from what pugs were using, as well as having some glassier classes orbit the ball.

The ball often had very tanky people because all defenses synergize and anyone getting hit by 50 people even for low damage are still equally as dead as being hit by 50 glass cannons. So the tougher balls getting nuked from around the area would live and be healed vs glass cannon balls.

But yeah I could imagine simple games where there is a meta. Those games are bad because a good system will let you counter what the enemy is doing.

The problem is expectations, specifically people having different expectations from each other relative to how inefficiently they're allowed to play.
I watch a dotard streamer who plays with his friends, he's a former pro and the rest of them are also on level.
He isn't always playing the best build to win and that's never a problem, because the people he plays with don't expect him to tryhard.

There is a continuum between builds that don't work and the best build for the character (against this enemy) and depending on the expectations of your team it's fine to go down the scale.
The issue is when you throw a random group of players in the same game, and they don't know each other, there is no way to know where the line stands.
I may think it's fine to play a third rate build that's fun for me, instead of the 90 minutes grind build that has 10% more winrate. But the 10 games a day no-lifer that's been put on my team, may think otherwise.
The problem is inherent to the solo-q sistem.

I am not that guy, but I can tell you why that is wrong. In a random pub the biggest issue will be ending the game. And when you are pushing the base even the most disoriented pubs are going to team up to defend. And to have a big impact at that point a hard to kill build is better.
A burst build might get you to the late game, but you would still need the team to take advantage of the opportunity a kill presents and take objectives instead of looking at a kill as an opportunity to delay the game, and with that give the enemy a chance to get back into the game.

Assuming that it is that kind of game where there is a separation, what are they getting fucked out of exactly?
Spirit of the game? You get a bad teammate, you just try to play around them or try your best. MMR? The number doesn't mean anything. Competitive is 9/10 times the exact same as casual, only real marked difference is the fantastic and/or goofy plays happen less often in a comp setting. Even casual games have people sweating their balls off trying to win, I've had games similar to the one where people were yelling like drill instructors and it genuinely felt as unpleasant as virtual trench warfare did.
It's quite literally all the same, competitive matchmaking is just streamer bait.
The strategy in casual games is also the same as comp, play around your team, have fun and don't get tilted. If you aren't doing that it doesn't matter what game mode you're playing, you're losing. Even if you win the round, even if your MMR increases, number go up!!!, you're losing. Don't get fun-scammed.

Vidya is my "me time" that means if i want i want to stand around and look at a fucking chair for 10 minutes i will do just that or if i want to mess around in menus instead of rushing from A to B i will also just do that. That is one side of the coin. The other is the fact that i'm in EU. That means i get matched with everyone from east coast NA all the way to east russia and from fucking finland down to morocco. Which means that the chances of anyone speaking english is very slim. People either don't have mics at all, or if they do they speak their own language, if they don't just forget to enable push to talk and have the TV or somebody else talking in the background.
