I think that was the point too. Especially when she became self-aware and a painter again. No one was completely sure how much of the canvas was just attuned to everyone's larp to a degree other then Renior and Momma when she isn't insane. pVerso was most fucked by this because since he had the soul piece, he wasn't a npc like everyone else but he was pretty damn close and he hated it.

Everyone starts bitching at Alicia's actions later on because she may have set it up for her to go on an adventure with her as the hero, and was making it even worse when she regained her memories and it was crushing Renior.

He was created by Aline, who was the mother of the real Verso, who died in a fire in their home. She painted him perfectly, with all the same memories, emotions, and motivations as the real Verso, but painted Verso is trapped in the canvas with all the knowledge of what the real Verso was on top of the immeasurable, world-shattering suffering and misery the canvas people endure. He wants the painting to be erased not only to end everyone's suffering but so that the real Dessendre family can try to move past their grief over his real counterpart's death, no matter how painful it is for him

Only in the sense that everything else in the painting does, otherwise yes he's made purely from Aline's chroma. >both choices viable
That's the point. Both Verso and Alicia represents two different outcomes of grief.
If you think giving in to the addiction instead of overcoming your grief would give an equal "happy" ending to the other one, then allow me to tell you: it's going to hurt bad when you'll loose someone you care about.

Alicia's ending is good in the sense that she's living her life selfishly for her own gain (which is fine), but it's a slow burn because she's essentially dooming the canvas with her future death.
Verso's ending is ending the canvas so that Alicia and Aline can try to move on, since they can't on their own and would rather kill themselves.

The only unambiguously true thing to come out of his mouth is "I don't want this life", and that's somehow also the most hypocritical and retarded thing he said
The actual reason he was upset at Alicia dying was because he couldn't confront the idea that she wanted to, that she could ever feel the same way he does, and he thought he could convince her otherwise because he assumed her reasons for doing so must have been as shallow and invalid as his were
It bothered him so much because it would break the last pretense he had for wanting to erase the canvas, he can't even consider it because he needs to keep pretending it wasn't just to satisfy his own shortsighted ennui

There are also writer than can setup a room with magical fire from a distance. Maybe the family can call some voodoo shit or something. Besides she's a painter, she can go in any painting, create anything: All Renoir and Verso said was to not get lost inside it (which, she is). So they do have an answer, especially Verso who says
>you're maelle
Yeah she's supposed to be Maelle, be resourceful and not giving up. But she's an Alicia, she doesn't even try.
>dislike equaling Aline with Alicia
Alicia is literally doing the same shit as Aline. LITERALLY. And at no point it was said that she was hurting from her scars/injuries.

Which is why I said: it's fine for Alicia to give in to her addiction. But you can't say it's not a dark ending, especially when she gives no shit to the state of the canvas after her death (which is getting 100% destroyed by either Renoir or Clea).
In the end, both Verso and Alicia endings do not give any single input to the canvas people. You might think Alicia's ending is better because they are alive at the end, but it's temporary.

And that's where the hypocrisy is at: people can't both say they like Alicia's ending and at the same time say they root for the canvas people. It doesn't work like that, or it's essentially the boomers way of thinking:

In the ending with the grave scene the family is together, we only see Clea roll her eyes and leave, we see Aline and Renoir embracing.
While the last scene is Alicia alone watching on as Maelle and the characters from the painting fade away. This is obviously the first step in saying goodbye both to Verso and the painting.
The fate of the family is left open ended which means that saying there can't or won't be any reconciliation is like previously stated entirely headcanon.

So any painting can die if the fragment of the painter's soul inside the painting decides to kill itself? But an outsider can force that fragment to be immortal so it can't kill itself. But it can kill itself anyway if another outsider slowly erases the painting depriving the other outsider of the paint energy it needs to forcefully keep the paint soul immortal. Also if a painting has multiple painters only one painter's soul stays in it, and it's only dependent on that person's soul. But the immortal soul also can't even reach the painter making him immortal despite his immortality which means he can't kill himself even if he wanted to.

The more likely explanation is that Aline gives up if there's no more Verso so Renoir can destroy the painting once and for all.

The simpler explanation is that everything works like a real painting. It goes on as designed unless an outside force tries to change it or destroy it.
Which means the only thing the Dessendres need to do is set the proper rules and fuck off forever and the painted world would go on happy and content. The major drama would come from a human-gestral war over scarce resources.

Verso's ending is about Verso. Whilst he cares about his fake family, he is keenly aware the real family is suffering because of "his" death and "his" painting. Alicia lets the veil down at the end that Renoir is right and the family grieving will continue.
Since Verso is, as everyone says, a perfect recreation, he knows better then anyone what verso would want. Every person in that family is selfish and what he want's is to not see them suffer at his expense. And he was willing to cut her down to make sure it didn't happen. If Alicia told the truth and was strong, and was happy to leave after re-populating the canvas, Verso would likely not do what he did. If she could pursuade them that her mother would be controlled all would be good.

The time dilation makes the plot meaningless. She only has two friends - Lune and Sciel. Both would start their own families and settle down. Maelle would get bored and leave in a few days, a few years in Lumiere's time. Her real life is more exciting. Renoir could wait for her to get bored. Maelle repaints the entirety of lumiere given time and she'll die sooner then later but at least she'll die happy and in a world she loves instead of a reality of torture.
The canvas continues on whether or not the painter dies since that was originally verso's canvas, Maelle will die but Lumiere will continue on.

Maelle is torturing an innocent man until she dies all so she can keep up a fantasy she didn't know existed 16 days ago (in real world time).
Verso was accepting the inevitable. He couldn't have beaten Renoir. At 33, it was already over. The adults were no longer old enough to raise adults.
And when he was fighting Maelle, everyone had already been erased. There was no one left to save except zombie Lune and zombie Sciel.
And "save" in this context means accepting Maelle as their god. Would you worship a dying, mentally unwell 16-year-old to live out decades with two zombies of people you've known a few months?

Young Verso did not want to paint. Only when he was older did he develop the courage to say so. He enjoyed his time in the painting because he was playing with his family. They're no longer there to play with him, the painting offers him nothing. Alicia COULD have fixed this by being willing to leave (this would've required Aline to also be willing) which could've meant they could come back and play with him, and that future generations could do the same. everyone else is sentient, Maelle is giving him the treatment verso forced on her except in her case it's mercy.
Painted verso wanted to end his existence and pleaded for death because he didn't have anything to live for while being stuck with immortality.
She ended that and let him age, if she was an controlling god she would keep him immortal, she gives him the chance to live the life real verso always wanted to be able to practice music freed from his obligations.

The rest of the canvas will get restored there's no reason why if she can restore gustave and sophie she can't for the rest of the world.

Young boy: Another Expedition… 33…
Gustave: Who are you?
Young boy: Me? A dream, an illusion… I don’t really remember. What I did all of this for… I miss… laughing with everyone…
Gustave: Who are you talking about?
Young boy: Re… Cle… What were their names? I… Why do I forget… Everything… Is washed away… (the boy has gone silent)

Young boy: Why… Why would she paint these things? Eating the world… eating our world… We used to have fun here… Together… I wish… we could still have fun… Sister…
Lune: (Try to communicate with the boy)
Young boy: (The boy ignores you, as if he does not see you.)

Young boy: It’s you… I know you…
Gustave: What do you mean, you know us?
Young boy: I’ve seen you countless times… Yet I’ve never grasped your essence. You are not from here…
Gustave: Our essence?
Young boy: I can feel it… Familiar yet so different. Like everything she created. Like the creature of darkness at the end of this path. It is but one of her many creations. Beautiful, in its own way, but deadly. Her favourite combination.
Gustave: You mean the Paintress? Why is she doing this?
Young boy: I don’t know. I wish I knew. It is not like her. She was my best friend. But she outgrew us. She had more important things, more important friends. She left me behind. The boy has gone silent.

Babby Verso talks constantly about how he loved playing with his family in the canvas, and we know that real Verso eventually told his parents he wanted to be a musician instead of a painter.

Her limited abilities are a major reason why the Maelle ending is so bad. You're surrendering your sovereignty to an incompetent 16-year-old. The writers didn't make this clear enough before you made your choice.
She didn't fix Lumiere. She didn't bring back its residents. At best she made faded copies of people she knew that would be nothing like their real life counterparts.
The Noco saga hints at this. You can't bring people back exactly as they are. People in the painting are collections of chroma. You can draw a similar figure but it's not the same entity. So what's the point?
If there was a genocide, I would get what you're saying. If there was a happy ending, I would choose it. But there isn't. There is an unhappy ending - Verso's - and a psychopathic ending - Maelle's. It's better to be unhappy than to be a psychopath.

They are sentient to the extent their creator gave them sentience. They're not a product of their environment through natural selection. They do whatever they were painted to do.
Now if Alicia valued sentience of this sort, she would go around painting hundreds of canvases. She would create thousands of worlds.
That's not what she does. She recreates "perfect" versions of her old friends that does whatever she wants them to do. Why else would they be content in destroyed Lumiere listening to Verso play to an audience of clones?
So she can't restore anything. Nor does she want to. She wants to live as Maelle because she doesn't want to live at Alicia. That isn't worth destroying her family over. If preserving painted worlds is the goal, it only makes sense to fight for the Painters. You know, the people she betrayed earlier which led to Verso being killed.

False dichotomy. They have free will but it's limited by their personalities which are shaped by their painter. Aline didn't create them - Verso created their parents as generic human archetypes. That's why someone like Simon is so badass. The earlier generations were a lot simpler. Verso didn't have a personal angle. He was having fun. Alicia obviously wants her friends to be her friends, so she's having that as part of her personal ideal.

She recreates gustave, who she doesn't know everything about and gives verso the ability to die. But we can assume that if either die she will probably resurrect them again with different memories. Especially verso so he doesn't get uppity again.

Verso and Renoir never bring up this point to convince Maelle to leave. So no their chroma/souls are intrinsically linked to this canvas.

Renoir correctly understands that he cannot reason with his teenaged, grief-stricken, drug-addicted (and currently high) daughter, and that she must be removed from the canvas for her own good. By the time they come to blows, she's already decided to die in the canvas. She made that decision as soon as she woke up there as Alicia.

I'll prove it since the other anon is homosexual for some reason. She says this is response to Verso asking "Can you heal her? Can you change her back?"
That said, Verso is old in Maelle's ending so she's either lying, somehow became skilled enough at Painting to alter creations by the time her ending takes place, or completely repainted Verso from scratch (and chose to keep his depression for whatever reason)

I figured out two things:

The time dilation conversion of the canvas and outside.

December 33 being Maelle's birthday and what happened with the writers.

First I will start with Maelle's Birthday, we see in a flashback that it's Maelle's birthday. I think this birthday was some months ago. Maelle isn't interested in paiting as her family is, she preferes books. She feels like she isn't good enough in painting and is jealous of Clea and Verso to a degree. She feels shy and insecure to be at their level. She summerges herself in reading books, and novels, and writing in general. Spending hundreds of hours in her room reading and learning to draw. One day she meets a writer who has an amazing way of talking. Her mom warns her about contacting writers and how they shouldn't interact with each other. On her birthday, Maelle opens a letter from this writer, the letter is poetry. Maelle reads and the letter itself (poem) is like an enchantment where fire starts and becomes real. Starting the fire in the manor.

Verso sees this and decides to go into the room to save Alicia. He gets burnt to point of no return but saves her. Here what plays is the dialogue of his ending his "you're okay, you're okay" but the positions would be from Maelle ending her holding her brother.

Aline starts passing more time in Verso's canvas, Renoir every day sees how she is missing more and more to the point where she starts sleeping in the atelier (we see the cushion). He sees Aline coming out everyday worse and worse (This is what I see everyday quote) Until at the hour she usually comes out, she doesn't. Renoir tells Maelle to stay home and not intervene. He goes to the canvas. Fight starts, the Hauler gets put in lumiere, Aline moves Lumiere to save it from the hauler. Alicia decides to go to sleep. ASSUMING she sleeps for 8 hours. This would mean Alicia enters the canvas at YEAR 49. if she slept 8 hours. Then 51/8=6.3.

1 hour outside canvas=6.3 years inside of the canvas time.

Full dialog:
Verso: It can’t be…
Maelle: Verso…
Verso: Clea… You’re alive? What happened to her?
Maelle: I bet Clea hated Maman’s portrait of her. So she painted over her.
Lune: And now she paints… Nevrons.
Verso: Can you heal her? Can you change her back?
Maelle: I can’t repaint her, Clea’s the only one skilled enough to paint over someone else’s creation.
Verso: I don’t like this…
Lune: This is going to be tough.

The way the painting power works is never fully explained. Clea was skilled enough to make Clea into an incredibly powerful nevron factory and Simon into an axon slayer that could only be overpowered by Renoir. That doesn't mean no other painter can effect another painter's creation in any way. Only Alicia says this (she lies sometimes and is wrong other times) and it very easily could've been in reference to her inability to overwrite the alterations of Clea, who is a MUCH stronger paintress.

This would also be a reasonable assumption with Aline's creations, given she's considered one of the strongest painters. It stands to reason Maelle likely actually believes she's incapable of altering the paintings of others, given altering Verso literally at any point would've solved all of her problems.
