But even that has a clear explanation, Chapter 4's egg implies that Krs started compulsively washing their hands after (traumatic incident) (which also explains why Toriel is so dismissive about Kris going AWOL in the bathroom at the end of Chapter 2). Rudy would know about this because he's stayed close to Toriel and Kris even after the divorce, as implied before and confirmed in Chapter 3/4 (Rudy is the last visitor to leave in the "Holidays" flashback in Chapter 3)

Referring to the player by Chara, or whatever they named the Fallen Human, stops working after you get the bombshell reveals that the kid you were playing as was an unrelated kid named Frisk, and that the human they named is just a dead kid who's been gone for ages and was also a toxic asshole who manipulated Asriel into assisted suicide just so Chara could try and go on a murderous rampage against humanity, I.E. actions taken by a character on their own, not decisions made by the player.

Flowey is cautioning you against resetting because it would undo all the work you did to get the "best ending" for everyone. There are at least 8 major variations of neutral endings which mostly amount to changing Sans's monologue, and a ton of smaller things the game keeps track of which also slightly change the ending and affect things throughout the game. This amounts to roughly 100 different possible endings to Undertale. There are a shitload of different possibilities for completionists to explore even if a normal person would consider most of them a waste of time. What you're describing is not the philosophy Undertale was built around.

Just within the system you've described, the ending monologues from Sans, the limits of the system are set up to be pretty cleanly understood so completionists know what to try. The snowman piece teaches the player that your inventory matters, and the main other thing that changes is based obviously on who you've killed and spared. Everything Undertale actually expects you to find is because it expects you to explore the boundaries it set, not to try shit entirely at random. The hope was evidently to minimize the odds of any given run being a total waste that shows you nothing new at all.
The intent of the speech is to set a new boundary: Nothing relies on the True Reset button. There is no exclusive content behind doing a True Reset.

There are several other variables that the game tracks and comments on. Sans will comment if you never SAVEd, if you never change your armor from the starting Bandage, if you never used healing items, and if you've done all of these at the same time. Some endings are even more obscure, like the "kill all of the bosses" ending has a variation depending on if you've also killed an arbitrary number of other monsters (both of these endings being different from Genocide and Aborted Genocide and Repeat Genocide).
The Snowman Piece is easy to stumble upon as you are specifically prompted to take it to the end, but for a completionist player playing blind you would only discover these by arbitrary trial and error. Toby did not give the player messages steering them to do these things and not "waste their time" doing other things, like the million other small things you can do that slightly change your play through. Undertale highly incentivizes replayability and exploring all of your options by design, despite AND because of the game's message partly being about completionism and how it fundamentally and irrevocably changes how you interact with a game.

As I explained above, all the things you mentioned were already flags. Checking all the flags for whether they alter the ending isn't "arbitrary". It is trial and error to discover which flags are likely to affect which events, but not arbitrary in the slightest, and the trial and error decreases with each flag you find. We are not trying to find Dess. We are an outsider brought in by a mysterious force for reasons we're not even sure of.
"Find her" is the motivation driving the story for the actual cast of the game. It was Asgore's job to "find her" but his obsession with a hopeless case broke his family apart. Noelle naturally wants to find her sister. Kris knows more about what happened to her than they're willing to tell anyone. And of course Carol wants to find her daughter, to do whatever it takes to find her.
Based on our understanding of the situation with Kris, Carol and The Knight, it seems like Carol has "found" her, but whatever happened that turned Dess into The Knight has made her not quite just Dess anymore. It's not as simple as just taking her home.
It seems likely that Carol's agenda, which she has guilted Kris into going along with, is not to "find her" but to save her, to bring her back to normal and make things right, the way they used to be. That's the narrative arc that Chapter 3 and 4 have set up: returning to a better time that isn't here anymore, being a family again.

I've been calling Kris a guy for the past seven years but reading up on The Girl theory is making me rethink everything.
Holy fuck it makes so much sense. The game makes you want to think its Susie, but for dataminers it should be Noelle because she can use swords, but Kris fits this the most. The Girl is supposed to use ribbons, that's Kris' defining characteristic.

I've seen people say "Oh Toby would never do this by making it so Kris wasn't nonbinary." but they don't actually know Toby.
I played the Halloween Hack, I saw how Toby subtly hinted at Dr. Andonuts being gay and he did that in a time where that wasn't ok. It's not brave to have a nonbinary character, that's the standard corporations will do nowadays for a bit of cheap pandering.
What I think it is is that: Kris is a girl, arrived to Hometown, no one knew what to make of her at first and Toriel had to read the book about humans. Everyone just took to calling Kris "they" though and she's shy enough that she wouldn't correct them. Meanwhile Toriel just keeps giving her Asriel's hand-me-downs and you can tell Kris is upset by this by how in the Dark World the wardrobe is full of clothes where she can wear whatever she wants (people always use that as an example of her being LGBT, no she's just frustrated that she gets nothing of her own). No one ever cared enough about Kris to really get to know her, Susie's the first true friend Kris has had in this awful town
Here's going to be the big kicker though, it'll be revealed that Kris never was nonbinary and that everyone just put their own biases on her. Hear me out on my theory, but i personally argue that the knight is actually the vessel itself, the one you make from the start of the game. My arguments and reasons go like this:

>The vessel is a goner (since the character creation screen and body parts are named in the files as Goner_X and stuff). And goners have a connection to gaster
>The knight has pierced hands similar to gaster, and is also very different from any other lightner in the dark world due to him mutating, flying, and doing other weird unusual stuff
>This can be explained due to the nature of the vessel, since it's neither a lightner or darkner (could it possibly have been a flowey situation? being injected with determination or something like that?)
>it can also possibly solve the issue of carrying undyne, since they could very likely maintained their knight form due to them neither being darkner or lightner, but something else.

My biggest problems for dess knight is the unused dialogue in the code implying she's CURRENTLY lost rather than it being set in the past. The hijacking of spamton to relay a message asking for help also supports. It's also an obvious choice after carol knight due to the antlers and whatnot. And alot of the "evidence" and arguments for dess knight in general just aren't strong and don't convince me. But what do you guys think of the idea of the vessel being the knight?
