What's the fundamental difference between a casual story game like Telltale's The Walking Dead, or Disco Elysium, and a conventional visual novel? The graphics are different, and there are differences in gameplay mechanics at rare instances, but for the most part, they're effectively point & click story games, no?
What are your thoughts on this? I'm trying to identify similarities. I don't play these games very frequently, so I lack the experience to discern the differences.
I am aware there are differences, but they feel so miniscule, that both types of games can effectively be classified in the same category.

I really need to get better at understanding narratives. I think that's my biggest weakness as a developer. I can make cool prototypes and mechanics all day long, but as soon as I need to come up with a story or plot to get people interested in my game, I fall short.

After further review I have severely overestimated how "good" I am at gamedev. What would take me 3 years to make could be done by a competent dev far faster than me, 6x as fast in fact. 6 months is within reason. Do I just suck at gamedev and my idea's are simple? It's the only way I can see someone competent making it that fast. This sucks, it's not like the early 2010's where cloning was unlikely. I can't even post my game without the risk of this happening.

Telltale games are just worse movies. They remove a lot of the interesting visual design and camera tricks that make movies what they are. They don't even live up to being a choose your own adventure that well cause things usually narrow down to one path regardless of choices made. Even the cheesy eroge VNs are better in this regard cause the main route usually branches out into routes for each girl that play out differently.

The same seems to be true of most fetishes.
Just make a bog standard jap style eroge and you'd for sure have a market. Keep it light, no weird politics or culture shit, and make good appealing art and multiple sex scenes and it will sell. Hell picrel only had 2 short unvoiced scenes per "girl" (with one of them being more foreplay-ish, so really one one scene per girl) and people still bought it. Looks like the bar is set low for WEGs and somehow no one's really serving this niche.
Going to grind art and draw some delicious traps to hopefully make one one day.
Just dropped an idea I've thinking about all day.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! My complex save system works!
Why yes I built the entire save system without testing it once prior to the first test (less than 6 hours ago) where I had a few issues that were quickly resolved, one being I forgot to add a script. My second more expansive test was held back by a trickier to find issue only to find out the fix was something very simple I overlooked. It works woooooooooo!!!!!
I need to become faster at coding. I know all the syntax and stuff I just am super slow at deciding what needs coded next. I sit there not typing anything for 15 minutes thinking what needs coded next then when I figure it out it's 5 minutes of coding followed by another 15 minutes of decision difficulty.

What do I mean?
Walking into a newer level.
Finding a new chest.
Finding a bunch of secret coins.
Reading a new VN section.
Reading VN dialogs.
Finding a new secret area.
Getting a Key to unlock a chest.
Filling a bar.
Filling a grid point.
Doing a rythm section.
All that shit doesn't require combat, but can be as enjoyable as violence.

i think the modern internet has too much information and too little fun. i think fun is more important than information. you can do cool stuff with little information, but you can't do anything if you are depressed.
