So in summary:
For Gemini Cup, which takes place on a Long track, there's more focus on skills that increase late race/last spurt velocity instead of acceleration since everyone is more likely to hit their target velocity due to how long the last spurt is. Groundwork is still helpful of course, but inherit skills like Red Shift and Shooting for Victory (which were in-demand in the first Champions Meeting) isn't recommended because they activate on the final corner, which is in the middle of the last spurt already so either the bonus acceleration is redundant or happens too late. Since it's a Long race, gold recovery skills are more necessary. Swinging Maestro, BoFA (although it can activate right out the starting gate and therefore be useless), and Cooldown are some recommended ones. Inherit skills will depend on the strategy of the Umamusume you want to bring.

These competitive gamemodes are almost always going to be dominated by whales. You're better off just signing up for free jims and taking your losses and just enjoy reading career stories if you're not going to spend. If you can win occasionally then good.

Is there even any strict canon for the game? In the main story, Mejiro McQueen fails to get the Tenno Sweep but she does defend the Spring Tenno Sho title. But in her career, one of the main goals is the Tenno Sweep. The career stories seem to follow from the respective bond story with the trainee at least.
