Yeah, thanks to social media and "like" culture taking off we're definitely seeing a push towards disingenuous ego-driven behavior... but even in anonymous spaces where you're not rewarded for ego, people find plenty of reasons to superficially hate one another.

The major problem I think is just too many fucking people. When the only true social outcasts in your middle school were you and the fat furry cringelord, you fucking made friends with him because you didn't HAVE any other options. Fast forward to the adult world, everyone theoretically has the ENTIRE WORLD as an option and so we're all inherently more judgmental and dismissive of others.

It goes the other way as well, people are less willing to reign in their shitty traits because everyone feels like "there's someone out there who will accept ME for ME, why should I have respect for my fellow man or pay attention to other peoples boundaries or needs!?"

I can see the problem quite clearly. I can't see a solution of any kind, unfortunately. Even if I personally strive to be very likeable somehow and give others free reign to be asshats to me, that's only going to find me very short lived "friendships" that burn out once they realize I'm not actually anything like them.
