I did not see Threads, or hear about it until you mentioned it.
The only point of a nuke, the only use for it, is a threat. It really makes no sense to actually use it, especially the way the US did.
And putting aside the practical argument, you are right. Its fundamentally an indecent device. So much so that I feel unable to describe it further. Its difficult to think of a more fundamentally indecent technological device, at least by scale or principle. It seems to exist simply to tempt humans to become rage monsters. It invalidates any claim of humanity the user could make.
Its not simply that it kills many people. It does it so indiscriminately. Its like the use of it confesses the animality of the user. And then there is the goddam nuclear aspect itself, the radiation and harm from it. Not only to the victims, but the ecology.
I have seen what indiscriminate use of technology can do to a natural landscape first hand. I remember reading about the Tsar bomb test and wanting to throw up at the thought at what it mustve done to the nature in that area. Same with the Bikini test. Just a disgusting disregard for our habitat.
I should probably shut up about it now. Its a mood killer.
