Going again in January, hopefully with my two friends. Anyone give a rundown on skiing? Am I retarded for wanting to learn how to ski while there or is it fine? Is it expensive? Think will go to Nagano because I don't really want to go all the way to Hokkaido, though I heard there's some places in Shimane for skiing. I doubt they would care about going to Kyoto, just want to fuck around and do gen z tourist shit probably, but I want to go back to Nagasaki and Nagoya, as well Hiroshima, Shikoku and Fukuoka. But I also want to see snow so maybe going up Tohoku would be nice. This is the fourth time I'm going and I don't want to be a loser like last time when I spent most of my day trying to use dating apps and getting rejected then wandering the streets at night and accomplishing nothing.
Also want to see train stuff, like find every train in the country, ride more obscure trains and do limited expresses instead of Shinkansen everywhere. I really enjoyed taking the Hinotori from Osaka to Nagoya. Shinkansen is still peak comfy though, especially at night.

Sounds like you need to discuss this and quite frankly a lot of the vacation with your friends before you go
>But I also want to see snow so maybe going up Tohoku would be nice.
There are other snowy places too, like Shirakawa for example

ive been, im just thinking where we need to go and where we need to stop. I dont want to say it, but might cut kansai out completely and just go straight to Hiroshima/Kyushu. However, i went to Fushimi Inari last january with my mother, she couldnt climb the whole thing so i want to go back and finish it.

I was thinking like staying in an area that just has snow. Idk im just all over the place, ive done so much but theres still so many places to go and still not enough time.

I don't want to dox myself, but I'm just traditionally good looking and tallish. It's not magical. I also put my profession on it, and my profession is one that is stereotypically assumed to make money.

If I were younger, I would probably do better because I think my age filters out women before they even get a chance to see my appearance.

If you're also good looking but not getting matches, it's because you don't know how to take photos of your face that highlight your jaw, cheekbones, and conceals any recission of your hairline. Get lighting that makes your skin look good and not show lines.

If you get matches in your home country, you can get matches in Tokyo.

You'd need an instructor and it would probably take several days of training on beginner's hills to reach a semi-adequate level. Do you have time for that? Even after you're done with ski school you may not be fit to safely navigate steeper slopes yet.

Anon more than fucking anything, I would recommend a bit of practice before you go to mitigate the chance of injury as much as possible, at the very least learn to stand and slow down when moving. Maybe it's different from snowboarding, but it's easy to fall the wrong way on the slopes and end up with a concussion or even a dislocated or broken bone. And the absolute last thing you want is to deal with some kind of hospital visit abroad.

Never really travelled and Japan is the only place i want to go. I just booked flights out of colorado from sept 5th (arriving in tokyo 6th afternoon) to 20th. I'm curious how long i should stay in each city and suggestions on where to stay in each. I dont have any real ideas on what i want to see when im there. The only thing i do know i want to see is Tokyo sea life park, maybe the ghibli museum if i can get tickets, and then a day probably walking around akihabara.

My biggest issues is i hate planning have no idea where to stay though chatGPT suggested THE GATE HOTEL ASAKUSA KAMINARIMON which does look nice especially for the price but wondering if i should pay more to stay in shinjuku or shibuya, or maybe move hotels? It would be nice to stay in a ryoken for a night, Yama No Chaya was suggested by GPT and it looks nice if maybe a little pricey, would stay there on the way to kyoto. Besides tokyo and kyoto i may go to osaka as well but not sure besides that. Any trips for places to go / stay / see while im there would be greatly appreciated. Ive heard from friends that went recently to just get a suica card and load it as needed and then pay for shinkansesn as needed.

Any general suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated. I pretty much hate traveling but need to visit japan so i dont mind spending whats needed to get the full experience as i might not travel again unless this unlocks that desire in me

no kyoto? And do you mean day trips from osaka or to osaka? Im tempted to just do a night or 2 in asakusa and then head to shinjiku for the rest, maybe . Then a day or 2 in kyoto but not sure the rest, unless i just spend more in tokyo

No matter where you stay in tokyo, you can use public transport to teleport to where you need to go, sjinjuku, asakusa, feels like nothing to get there so no point in switching hotel.
I havent been to kyoto beyond that big inari temple for a couple hours. Its just too crowded and everything is the same.
Spend time in osaka and you can do daytrips to: Kobe, Himeji, kyoto, nara, hiroshima (if you can endure the trip), and im sure there are others.

whats nice about hiroshima except the whole bomb shit (which i dont care about)? I know you can get whereever but 30+ min going to different places seems a little annoying. Im thinking shinjuku for the good izakaya alleys since trains stop around midnight. Theres this HOTEL GROOVE SHINJUKU that looks really nice but its quite pricy so id probably only want to stay 3-5 nights max then move to another one thats a lot cheaper

Yeah those are fine though often only most effective for severe dehydration; if you're just talking about a mild pace of walking ~10-15km(about average per day) in a city, it's best to stick to straight water or non-sweetened tea(if you absolutely need flavor).

Was going over some photos from my 2023 trip and I remembered a distinct memory
I was walking towards enoshima from kamakura and I saw this little cafe along the road facing the ocean. think it was called the sunrise shack. Popped in and there was a white girl that looked like she was teleported straight out of Ann Arbor behind the counter. She was super cute but looked so out of place there, it really just looked like she was an American college student.
I'm not shocked I saw another white person but I am interested how she's in that position. No american college student on a gap year or doing a study abroad would be working a cafe wagie job at 2pm on a tuesday, especially not one this far from Tokyo. If she was an expat (which is doubtful because she doesn't even look old enough to drink), again, why would she be doing this job?
Maybe she's a 2nd gen of expats but her vibes are SO american college, "ugg boots and pumpkin spice" - down to the fashion - that I can't believe she'd be able to capture the aesthetic that soundly without having very recently lived it. Wish I'd asked her her story lol

I kind of just want to be check it out and see all there is, even as an anime fan I've wanted to see Japan for all things Japanese since I was a kid.
The places my coworker also recommended are:

>Enoshima
>Yokohama
>Kawagoe
>Saitama
>Asakusa
>Llueno
>Kyoto (recommended 4 nights here)
I reckon it'll snow a lot but I've barely been in places where it snows consistently and get a pretty enamored by it. The tattoos are the biggest faux pas here. After dumping my big fat shit all over the seat, I picked up a bunch of it with my bare hands and smeared it on the hair of the young lady sitting near me. She screamed and tried to run away, but I grabbed her hair, inadvertently smearing more shit all over it, and threw her to the ground. I then sat on top of her and continued smearing my big fat shit, this time on her face too. I made sure to force her mouth open and put some in there for good measure.

Is what I just did illegal? Will I be in trouble with the law for doing this? I'm currently wandering around outside with shit smeared all over my clothes - I wiped my hands on myself so I could make this post - and I'm wondering what to do.

>large amounts of sweat can cause heat stroke due to the loss of sodium and potassium, which are essential for body fluids, as well as water.
Sodium and Potassium being the sole cause of heat stroke is minimal at best, and some of the easiest shit to replenish.
You would have to go days without eating anything proper to get these levels or have some absurdly low body fat.

>low sodium
Virtually any meal in Japan will have more than enough sodium to do you over
>low potassium
most snacks have enough to get you back to functional levels hell french fires have a okayish amount despite being fried

Both are stupid easy to replenish in quick fashion and one meal gets you more than enough. Water is key to tansporting all that properly and helping your body cool off. Anons would literally have to go on a week long drinking bender akin to "weekend with the lads" only restocking on water via coffee/soda/ramen broth to become that severely dehydrated at which point your piss would have been giving you warnings of being brown far in advance.

I would argue that if you're worried and simply want to cover every possible base just bring a multi vitamin with you to take daily and be done. Dressing appropriately with breathable clothes, light/white colors, and simply staying hydrated is more than enough to battle "the bloody fookin 30C monster!".

>b-but how do japanese business men stay so cool
They don't, but believe it or not the amount of layers in a business suit actually help keep the body at a regular tempature. It's much harder to warm up if worn right and you won't notice much if you're dipping into subway cars or shops constantly to cool a bit.

I've traveled quite a bit (it'll be my first time in Asia though) and airports always buttfuck you, same with train stations, whenever I've exchanged money the best spot are downtown currency exchange offices, every capital usually has some spot where you can find a few next to one another, so they tend to get nice competitive rates.

In the mountainous area of northern Kanto, there is snow in winter. Also, there are abundant hot spring resorts. Kusatsu Onsen, Ikaho Onsen, Shiobara Onsen, and Kinugawa Onsen are major onsens, and there are also many hot springs in Nikko City.
For quieter places, there are Manza Onsen, Yunishigawa Onsen, Takaragawa Onsen, Houshi Onsen, and so on. There are also many scenic spots near those hot spring resorts, so why not spend a night there and relax?

You can't afford to be taking in sodium and potassium from solid foods while you are sweating profusely in the heat.
In some cases, heat stroke starts as soon as you feel thirsty. It is common knowledge among Japanese that water alone cannot prevent heat stroke.

In my school club activities, the girl who was the manager would prepare a homemade drink for everyone to drink, consisting of 0.01% salt water, lemon slices, and a large amount of ice in a water jug to prevent heat stroke.

Advice like this is for elderly people and the physically disabled. I cannot imagine a normal healthy man in his 20s-30s getting heat stroke in <100 F weather if he just drinks water and eats food like a normal person and wears light clothes. It's not that hot, ffs. The only time I ever remotely felt like I was gonna pass out due to the heat was when I was wearing a uniform which did not permit any airflow whatsoever, so the sweat I produced didn't evaporate to cool me off. The human body is remarkably good at not dying under normal earth conditions.

Heat stroke is no joke but it's quite hard to get when walking in a city full of shops, connivence stores on every corner, vending machines, ramen shops, and so on. We aren't talking +60 minutes of PE class on a 90 degree day, we're talking about walking through a city or small town while it's "30 degrees".

Yes food will be enough for anyone who eats properly unless you're doing OMAD or some retarded shit which you know the prevention methods of heat stroke.

Basically to get heat stroke in Japan while visiting and not doing stuff like hiking, sitting in a car with the windows up for hour+, and so on you have to be full retard. I know because my friend from norway managed to get it last year but he's never been in places over 25C. He wore all dark clothing+jeans, drank heavily each night, walked around with strong 0's as "there was water in it", ate only when piss drunk because they had anxiety going into ramenshops, and finally found out one day after spending +6 hours carrying heavy merch around.

As someone who hikes in Japan's mountains regularly, sure heat stroke is no joke but you have to actively try for it in a city like Japan. You would have to be the stereotypical walmart american or human skelley to get it that fast in ~85-90F

Japanese people take actions to prevent heat stroke in summer. They do not walk around outside for long periods of time, carry a sweat towel, wear a hat, put up a parasol, carry a portable fan, drink water frequently, and so on.

Asians have a different make up and lack some enzymes that other groups have. This is why asian red face is a thing. They handle sickness, medicine, etc differently.

After living in Japan a fair bit here is why
1) Medicine in Japan is very low dosage compared to EU/US where they just blast you with 500mg pills and blow the sickness out.
2) Japanese often have much lower bodyfat that your body, believe it or not, uses in a very helpful way during sickness where you might not be eating as much or using far more energy to have a fever to kill whatever it is.
3) most Japanese lack a lot vitamins and minerals westerners are overloaded on. It's a reason you see so many supplement commercials. Calcium deficiency is a real thing in Japan.

All this combined with long work hours and low rest hours just often fuck with their recovery and ability to ward off what would be a small sniffle or scratchy throat for others.

That's what I did and I had a blast recently, but 3 weeks is the furthest I would go now. My last trip was around 7 weeks and got homesick around 3 weeks in. Now I am feeling the opposite though, I miss a lot of stuff there.

Covered a lot of prefectures mainly Kyushu, Tohoku, and a fair bit of hokkaido, I really liked Akita's food.
I'd still check tabelog and google maps to get a rough idea before deciding on places to eat and I usually aim to try each area's local specialty.

The only areas I have left to cover are Chubu (only did Niigata and Sado island), Shikoku, and Okinawa.
I'm content with just traveling to that country.

Yeah I kinda fucked up as well, I was having a blast chatting with a local guy on my left at a bar, it was getting fairly late so he asked for the bill and I followed suit.
3 girls sitting to my right were overhearing the conversation and commenting, after I payed my bill one of the girls 3 seats to the right was staring at me the entire time I was paying, I just glanced in her direction and locked eyes for like a second and she started talking to me.
I only chatted with her a bit but the bar master and his assistant seemed a little agitated because I wasn't ordering anything so I told them I had to wake up early tomorrow and left because it would be awkward to order again after I already payed and I didn't want to look desperate in front of those guys.
But man she was fucking hot I should've stayed there longer.

The best moments I had there didn't involve chatting with women though, planning a trip around that only leads to disappointment such encounters are rare let alone successful ones.

Also that some springs are strict enough they'll shoo you away regardless, and that if you can conceal your tattoo with your hand you can sneak in, but I'd rather be honest than risk getting kicked out. How much truth is there to all of this?

I just went to Japan. A thread or two back I was freaking out at late night on how to get from Osaka to Oshino to Tokyo. It was easy. My wife and I's suitcases were ~20kg only so busses and trains weren't even bad.
Oshino was much nicer than i anticipated despite the massive tidal wave of Chinese that broke upon the town at 10am. We stayed in an adorable thatched roof hut with its own onsen - we were the only two people there so it was like a private bath.
https://masunoie.jp/en/
There was also an incredible Yamanashi prefecture aquarium within walking distance that was one of the highlights of the trip.

RE: HEAT STROKE - my wife almost got it when we were wandering around Taketomijima around 11am. The restaurant we practically travelled to the island to visit didn't actually open at 11 and, shockingly, an island with a population of about 300 DOESN'T have a lot of vending machines.

So has anyone actually experienced any anti whitoid racism that actually bothered you? I've gotten the crossed arms and "SORRY WE FUURLL NO SORRY PREASE GO" at restaurants plenty of times but it's never really bothered me. It's their private business, they can reject whites if they want, I don't really think I should judge them. I've also never got "gaijin seat"-ed before, I find people usually sit next to me if the train is full. And I'm sort of a goblin looking weirdo, I'm not some chad.

Have things actually gotten significantly worse in the last couple years or is it just ragebait? I've still found Japanese to be extremely polite and welcoming if you just go to the places that don't mind gaijin that are decent enough at japanese.

Mount Takao is a great time. I took the chair lift then walked up the rest of the way. The main trail is paved so it's really easy going. You'll see lots of old people doing it to. There's a few stalls along the way selling dango and some other stuff. I stopped by at the monkey park which was neat. The flower garden wasn't in bloom at all when I went. It was very green and peaceful though.

I took trail 6 down if I remember right. Only saw one other person on that trail. It's not paved at all, all wilderness. Take a look at the trail map because each trail passes by different highlights.

I also highly recommend hitting the onsen after your hike. There is one behind the train station there. Staff are really friendly. The food there was good to. I don't know if you can do laundry there so bring a change of clothes. Nothing feels worse then putting on sweaty ass clothes after a nice soak.

I went to one of those "sorry were full" restaurants in Osaka, and we got a lot of dirty looks from everyone who tried to walk in and were denied a table even though it seemed they had tables open. Except they didn't actually have tables open, all were occupied by people with reservations eventually. If you try just walking in somewhere in Osaka or Kyoto, don't be shocked if they deny you without a reservation. The Yakitori was fantastic and we got along well with the owner, so I knew he wasn't denying the white (and Japanese) people at the door because he hated them. He did hate Chinese people though

East Asians have degenerated apocrine glands, so there is no stinks from the armpits, navel, or genitalia and they also have dry, powdery earwax. People who are filthy or eat garlic smell, but that's a different kind of smell.

So it is extremely difficult to obtain deodorant to control your body odor. There are detergent-free laundromats in hotels and towns, so a change of clothes is minimal and there is no need to bring detergent, but you should bring enough deodorant to get the job done.

Never done it myself but I have friends who viewed them from the observation bridge. They said it was cool but they wished they'd have done the boat tour instead. Also from what I understand it might be a time sensitive thing, like they only happen during certain times of the day, so plan out in advance. Spent all of Wednesday at the world fair. Hot as hell. Most of the pavilions provided some kind of shade but I strongly recommend bringing your own parasol anyway. Dress as lightly as possible and bring sunblock too.

Of the pavilions that that I went to, the top 3 best were China, Spain, and Canada. The biggest waste of time by far was Nordic Circle (the pavilion sucked, though the restaurant was good). The others ranged from cool to meh. I heard from friends and coworkers that Poland, USA, France, and especially Italy were all very good, but I didn't get a chance to go to any of them due to either reservations or just the line being too long.

Food was extremely, extremely overpriced and generally mid to low quality, except for Malaysia that shit was absolutely bangin' and I would eat there again in a heartbeat. Also the entire venue is 100% cashless including the vending machines, so keep that in mind if you're planning to go.

>got any more tips?
The main thing I want to stress once again is how hot it was and to take precautions against the sun. If you're going in August or early September this is the top priority.

Also research well ahead of time whether any pavilions you want to see will require a reservation or are walk-in friendly; there are several ways to make reservations ranging from months in advance to day of. There's an app that my friend had on his phone which had a heat map of activity for the entire park, which was really useful for avoiding places with huge lines and just organizing our entire route in general. I don't remember what it's called but iirc it's NOT the "official" world fair app but another one.

Also if you want good seats for the light and water show in the evening you should definitely start heading to the amphitheater about an hour in advance because while it's fairly big there's so many people that seats fill up fast. You can get a good view of the show from the Grand Ring as well, which is what we did.

Beware of insects once the sun starts to set, they don't sting but they're absolutely everywhere especially the bathrooms.

>how long were waits?
About 30 minutes to actually get into the venue (we arrived at around 10:50, the expo opens at 11), and for the pavilions we went to, waits ranged from 10-50 minutes. The really really popular pavilions - which, again, we didn't go to - looked to have 1+ hour waits.

How stupid is my rough plan. I'll be going in autumn for almost a month.
1. After resting 1 night in Tokyo, fly to Kagoshima.
2. Next day take a car ferry to Yakushima, and spend two or three days hiking there. Get back to Kagoshima, take a cesna flight around Sakurajima, go by train to Kumamoto. Next day go to ASO and spend a couple of days hiking there.
3. Return to Kumamoto and fly back to Tokyo. Rent a car and spend a bit over a week traveling north-west of Tokyo to places like Nikko National Park, Nagano,Chubu-Sangaku National Park, Toyama, Kanazawa.
It's probably unrealistic to visit all these places and take a few hikes in 8 days.
4. With whatever time is left visit Kyoto (2days), Osaka (3days), Hiroshima (1 day) and spend a few days in Tokyo before flying back.

However, I'm also planning on either going to Hokkaido or Kyushu. It seems as though I can only go to one of these places. I'll be staying there for around five days either way. Which of these should I go to? Some quick information about me: I can easily stand the heat (went to Japan once before, early in July, and didn't find it hot at any point), I like nature but am not super fond of shrines, and I enjoy walking in modern cities with good architecture. Tokyo has lots of shopping and sometimes kids arent super interested in that unless its toys? imo shinjuku is largely a nightlife focused place, so maybe skip it?

do Shibuya + harajuku
asakusa + ueno + akihabara
and lastly disneyland or Tokyo station+Odaiba(teamlabs gundam)+Obsevation tower of your choosing

you could spend 10 days in tokyo honestly, but i tihnk this covers the big stuff

theres also Hakone, a volcanic area 2 hours south west of tokyo, it has views of mount fuji as well and is a popular onsen/ryokan town if you want that experience.

imo i think you should make tokyo longer, you can probably do kyoto in 2-3 days, osaka in 1-3 days, nara in 1 day or even a half day trip. this is a pretty standard golden route

We would take 2 days to hike it. we are in shape and do hikes, so I'm pretty sure we can do it. Though, I don't think I want to carry all the extra hiking boots and clothes. I'll try and convince him and say we can go to nara and asuka and other places instead. Might be cloudy anyway

Thanks for the itinerary. Would mt fuji be a day trip in your itinerary after already being in Tokyo? From what I've seen it's a ways if coming from kyoto. Or is there a nice place to view it from the south?

Last question for anyone, would you recommend staying in just one city out of osaka and kyoto? I would like to to show him kyoto after dark, and I think there will be a night time festival that peaks around 8 pm. But I wouldn't want to miss the train back. Also o heard osaka has more restaurants and sight seeing at night. What do you guys think?

if you really want to mt fuji, then you should do it, lots of people in this thread do it. forget about the day trip to it. whats your flight situation? are you leaving out of tokyo as well? idk what the placement for the mt fuji hike is it better for early or when coming back.

yeah you gotta do mt fuji when in tokyo, kyoto and osaka are 2-3 hours away on bullet train. you can see mount fuji in the distance from kamakura or hakone which two popular day trips from tokyo, so thats sortof an option.

when i went i did hotels in kyoto and osaka, but i stayed in both for 4 days so it felt less of a nuisance to switch hotels. a lot of people stay in osaka and do day trips to kyoto and nara. it would really depend on your itinerary and how much kyoto you would want to see. i think at least 2 days is necessary for kyoto, you can see the Arashiyama area on day 1, and the fushimi inari and gion district on day 2.

Any recommendations of areas to stay along the chuo line? I've stayed in Tokyo multiple times and want to try something away from places like Shibuya/Shinjuku, something a little more authentic and low key, but still with nice places to eat/drink and with easy transport into Tokyo proper.

Those of you who are in Tokyo right now are probably fed up with the heat, so it is wise to avoid the outdoors during the day and visit the indoor facilities.
When the evenings get a little cooler, it's time to head out to the festivals.
There are other festivals, but the most recent major events are listed below.

Tsukiji Honganji Noryo Bon Odori Festival: 7/30-8/2
Nakano Ekimae Bon Odori: 8/2-3
Kanda Myojin Noryo Matsuri: 8/8-8/10 (Animesong Bon Odori on 8/8)
Itabashi Fireworks Festival: 8/2
Edogawa-ku Fireworks Festival: 8/2
Minato Mirai Smart Festival (Yokohama): 8/4

Kichijoji is the best, but the downside is that there aren't many hotels. Therefore, I recommend Tachikawa. First of all, there are many hotels. anon just get your trip booked, make sure you have a hotel, and literally wing it.
plan some stuff in the airport, while on the plane if you choose to pay for internet, etc. even your first day in the hotel as you will probably be jet legged.
Having a complete planned itinerary is bollocks, especially if Japan is a country you always wanted to visit. Once you get touch down and get through the airport and as long as youre staying in one of the major metros of Japan you will easily find things to do on a whim. Just enjoy your trip and dont beholden to an agenda, especially if solo.
The most important prep is to make sure you have your hotel booked in advance as Japanese immigration requires you provide your hotel / stay information.
otherwise just have fun living carefree in Japan for a few weeks anon

Yeah sort of. I booked 2 weeks just for Comiket in 2023, outside of the 3 days there I completely winged every other day spent there. Half the time I was in arcades and shops in akiba, the other half I spent wandering around, following crowds of people, and ended up attending some festivals and visiting some temples since it was that time of the year. But I'm somewhat of a boring person who likes being alone and just walking so it might not be for everyone.

Oh yeah only other thing I looked up beforehand was private onsens, I saw one in a video once and really wanted to try it, having the entire thing to yourself is so luxurious and yet it was much cheaper than the experience would be in my cuntry.

Akazawa Onsen Hotel. They have private onsen rooms you can book even if you're not staying at their hotel.
The place was really nice, including the train ride there, greenery everywhere and a view of both mountains and the sea, I guess it'd be the kind of place you could bring a girl over to impress her. (I wouldn't know.) Of course I went during winter so I imagine it looks even better in spring/autumn.
You can check out the reviews on google if you want a detailed guide on how to get there. They have a shuttle bus that goes from the train station to their place. (Also they got two stops, one for their hotel and the other for the SPA area, you can go directly to the SPA if you don't want to book a night at the hotel, they also have a restaurant there.)

I want to have 2 plans for the rest of the trip depending on my mood after leaving Tokyo: if I feel like doing more Tokyo, I will return to Tokyo for the remainer of the trip, but if I feel sick of the cities I was planning on going to the north to a couple of rural areas I was lightly planning for. as for things to check out, I think Okinawa world is a good starter place, well depending if you're staying around Naha. Churaumi Aquarium is fun its in the northest part of the island. I did see a lot of resort hotels in that area so It's possible to split your trip in both areas. American Village as is awesome some great food options if you still want Americanized food.
