How did they write a character this fucking well? Probably my favorite video game character in the last 10 years. He is so nuanced with so many layers to peel away and analyze, and most importantly he was awful and truly selfish things, but we still sympathize and care for him regardless. I still think the ballsiest move the game made was establishing Gustave as a traditionally likeable and virtuous protagonist that most people could easily get behind only to kill him off a 1/3rd of the way into the game to replace him with a manipulative and morally grey opportunist who’s actually on the same page as the main antagonist and betrays the party at the end.
