Considering Toby Fox single-handedly got me interested in the art of storytelling (I discovered Undertale when I was in like, middle school), whether it be consuming others' stories or creating my own, I think that hole left by Deltarune will be patched up just fine. Deltarune is not the only story worth giving up my heart to, not by a long shot. There are hundreds of stories out there just as wonderful as Deltarune, just as touching, just as powerful. Whether they are stories I've already read or waiting for me to discover them, there's always gonna be something worth experiencing. Deltarune for me isn't the end-all be-all. I was thinking about the original heroes.
We generally accept that Kris is substituting for Vessel as the cage and Susie is substituting for Noelle as hope girl, but we don't really have a good candidate for Ralsei. "The prince alone in deepest dark." It could be he was the original third hero but his origin is clearly tied to Kris, which makes it very unlikely.

A character alone in deepest dark really only brings to mind the unused dialogue voice that's been trapped in pitch black silence. Seemingly a lightner who fell into the dark an unknown time ago. It can really only be Dess based on the information we have now. But obviously she's not a prince. And the only other prince we have is Lancer who isn't alone and probably isn't in "deepest dark."

We do have a potential prince though. Toriel's dark world form was a queen, Asgore's asylum prophecy glass showed him with a crown, a king, and that suggests Asriel is a potential prince. I think Asriel was supposed to be the one who disappeared into the dark instead of Dess, leaving him to become the third hero. Something happened to switch their places and set us up for the alternate roster we have now.

#1 is that Ralsei is in the exact slot he's supposed to be in, he just changes his form depending on what the other two hero slots come in as
#2 is that the "real" prince of the dark is the Shadow Mantle boss which is similarly found at the very deepest depths of the Dark World, uses fire magic, has odd amounts of knowledge about Kris and the world at large and is also wearing a robe

The scene in chapter 4 is one of the best scenes Toby has ever done from an emotional and tension building perspective, and for a lot of people (including myself) made weird route feel like a more interesting story than even the normal route.
The heart sneaking up through the vents, slotting itself into the room through the dialogue UI that Noelle doesn't realise she's causing to happen, the way the heart sneaks back into Kris with no animation. The music and color shift. It's amazing.
