One of the somewhat common things that happens just before someone dies is they have an almost miraculous and unfortunately temporary recovery. Someone with chronic pain might wake up able to move all their limbs just fine; the senile remember their kids, the mute remember how to speak. It's an actual recognized thing, the 'end of life rally' among other names. They look like they've gotten so much better, and then within the day, two days max, they're dead. It's a real thing and it's fucking horrible and it also makes for really easy storytelling drama. Rudy is 100% a walking dead man after that church trip.
