I don't know if it's actually that isolated, it just feels isolated to me. You get mentions of a world beyond Hometown with Asriel going to university and presumably the books and websites that exist in the game were made by people from somewhere else, and also Susie is originally from somewhere else, but I just don't actually get a sense that there's anything outside of Hometown when I'm playing the game.
