Tails is alone, trapped in a weird, scary, desolate place. A ghostly figure starts bullying him, calling him a failure. Tails feels sad and demotivated by this. This is just like that time with Infinite! Luckily, Sonic shows up to help. He starts to free Tails, but Tails is more concerned with his emotional state. His biggest desire is to be cool and confident like Sonic, and to be a good partner that Sonic can rely on. He expresses his fears to Sonic. How does he respond?

Tails concludes that he is fundamentally flawed and needs to take some alone time to go on an off-screen life-changing adventure in which he becomes a completely unrecognizable character

Tails concludes that he shouldn't let these thoughts take over him, he is reminded of his strength and feels encouraged to work hard. He confidently promises that he will continue to do his best like he has in the past

The problem is that the direction for Cream quickly went south after Sonic Advance 2. First Sonic X locked her to a couch, then Heroes forced her into being babysat by Amy and then Rush made her into Blaze's therapy pet.

The problem is that the writers didn't even realize the lesson these characters were supposed to learn in the first place. This is why all the IDW stories feels meaningless. Things just happen just to happen with no real goal since not even the writers talk with each other to make a real plan.

I'd say Knuckles because he's more prone to comedy relief, but he still gets the occasional bone.
Sega just stopped using Metal as Eggman's right hand and nowadays he gets a standout boss fight at best. Rivals 2 did have that one mildly interesting bit where he pulls out the Chaos Emerald powering him so that Shadow can escape the Ifrit's dimension and Sonic 4 episode 2 tried to make him a secondary antagonist like in CD and Chaotix, but until Sega actually Metal to win in some fashion, nothing's liable to change.

If none of the IDW staff are communicating and stories just get passed off from person to person, does that mean the entirety of IDW Sonic is just headcanon? Sure Sega technically approves of things (in that they don't want lawsuits) but if characterization is on autopilot, what is even canon in this comic?

At least Sonic Prime was adamant about not giving a fuck about anything.

Lanolin had the perfect opportunity to force Whisper and Silver to tell her exactly why they thought the new recruit was a shapeshifting killer instead of blaming Silver for everything, kicking him out with a rushed vote and then dropping the problem entirely. Later on, she initially prioritizes arresting Sonic over Clutch (a crime lord guilty of many offenses) and a crashing airship her boss and many other civilians are on before Tangle BEGS her to reprioritize.

But yeah, other than that, Lanolin wasn't the only one being stupid about the whole thing.

No. The Sonic fanbase saw her introduction as a leader to a newly formed group and immediately jumped on her being the "Sally" of IDW. Two mistakes in that:

1) Sonic was the leader of the Freedom Fighters, not Sally.
2) Sally was a noncombatant who was the brains of the operation. Lanny is a foot soldier so not Sally.

Of anything, Jewel had more potential to be the new Sally but she doesn't have tits so nobody paid attention to her.

It's been proven that the history of IDW Sonic differs from the games, it's just not canon, even if characters like Tangle do canonically exist, and the only reason they won't just admit that is due to a larger problem, that being the Sonic series refuses to commit to serialized storytelling or episodic storytelling, so it keeps trying to do both, so if something isn't canon many fans won't care about it on principle.

Oh, I'm well aware. Sega's been mishandling Metal Sonic for quite a while now although at this point, it'd be easier to say what characters haven't been mishandled, am I right?
It's a shame too, because Metal is A. evil, B. intensely jealous of Sonic and C. a machine that can be upgraded. Metal SHOULD be ever evolving, ever advancing to keep up with Sonic, especially when he has enough drive to go against whatever countermeasures Eggman programs into him to try to keep him in line.
But he has to wait in line behind Shadow and the other rivals and Sega never really gave him something like Eggman's SA2 arc or Bowser in the Mario RPGs where he gets to strut his stuff and remind people why he's a threat. The closest to that is probably either Heroes or Rivals 2.

Because like with Clutch and anybody that knew about him (Amy, Rouge, the Chaotix), ANY common sense and basic communication would have ended the problem then and there. The issue is that Sega rarely treats him as more than a boss, so he rarely gets the chance to go beyond jobbing. Metal's insecurity SHOULD be a driving force for him to one of Sonic's fiercest rivals, but it's rarely played as such and in games like Mania, he's a one and done and doesn't show up again after his boss fight.
