The Great Lisbon Earthquake was a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that happened in the Atlantic in 1755. It caused catastrophic damage and a massive loss of life in Portugal, Spain, and Morocco. The Earthquake itself leveled around 80% of the city of Lisbon. Massive fissures opened in the city center. People flocked to the docks to try and escape the collapsing buildings but the earthquake triggered tsunamis which flooded Lisbon and the surrounding areas. It being an important feast day, many folks were in churches and had candles lit. The earthquake caused these candles to fall over and set homes and other buildings on fire, resulting in a massive firestorm that asphyxiated people 100 feet away from it.
