E-bike antipathy Archived /n/
Dia dhaoibh

I've been directed here to inquire as to why ebikes are bad. My opinion as of yet is that if I get to work safely (for me and others) without needing to take a shower, it's good. Cycle lane availability means I don't need to go near pedestrians and don't mix too much with cars. This all adds up to me pointing to that ebikes are positive, could anyone explain to me their viewpoint as to why they would be negative? I personally hate escooters as they are always ridden by knackers unstably and in dangerous manners.

Go raibh míle céad maith agaibh.

She knows I liked her and now I’ve absolute lookmaxed and money maxed. She still is a poor npc with no job. Anyway, she’s a normie unlike me. But everything I think about her I want to kill everyone around me. I hate how humiliated I feel every SINGLE DAY. I’ve been mistreated my entire life, I want to have some power, I want to have respect.

What would your dream transportation job be? Any time period, any place.

For me, it would be running steam locomotives on the ATSF from the late 1930s to the end of steam. A close second would be an airline captain in the 1950s and 60s to experience the beginning of the jet age.

Keep in mind this is for bikes meant to be loaded up. I guess a marketing exec at some point decided kickstands are for poors so no expensive bike can have them now, just like MTBs got stuck with Presta valves.

They will literally drill 15+ holes just in case your bike bags use bottle bosses instead of straps, but outright refuse drilling 2 for a kickstand

It seems Calcutta trams will finally be going the way of the dodo once and for all. It's been a slow agony for many years now, apparently the local government wasn't putting any money into the system and used any excuse to close down more and more lines. Strange to still see a 1st generation tram system get shut down.

Brian Shaw? Yeah I know him by that name. Hell, I worked with him in Nam. Back then we called him "slant-eye slashing" Shaw because he never came out of a tunnel without a scalp, an ear, or covered with blood.

Most would call him insane, but that is why the green berets trained him. They saw potential. It wasn't until they learned his methods that they truly realized what a monster they created.

You see, most guys that go tunnel clearing take guns. Not Brian. No, he took knives, clubs, hatchets, sometimes nothing but his bare hands. After a few missions I got a chance to talk to him in the mess. He was wearing his blood stained hat, sunglasses, and combat fatigues, smoking a cigarette and drinking johnny walker black. It was contraband, but you NEVER told Brian what he could and couldn't do.

I asked him why he never took guns with him. He lowered is head and took a long slow draw from his hand rolled cig, pulled off his sun glasses and looked me right in the eyes, piercing my soul.

"I do it out of respect. Respect for the white race. These slant eye'd scum bags don't deserve the mercy of an American made bullet, but the slow torturous death of the hands of an American man!"

In a flash he pulled out his weathered, but razor sharp knife and stopped just short of sticking my gut. "The look in their eyes when I slip this baby into their swollen, rice filled bellies is reason enough. To see the last lights flick off in their heads as they see a real killer work."

We have contacted Brian Shaw regarding an ongoing issue between him and Mike Trainson. The former World's Strongest Man allegedly got into an altercation with Trainson, where he supposedly told him, and I quote: "he touches me one more time, I'm going to un-lisp that locomotive myself".
During our call, Shaw stated: 'hey listen man, I made it clear that he tries something, and the ropes in the ring won't be the only ropes he'll be seeing in his life". He then refused to elaborate in the matter and before closing the call, he said: "Hitler did nothing wrong, but I will".

Thoughts on Clik valves /n/
I can't leave well enough alone, and I'm mildly interested in Clik valves. Anyone have any experience with them? They seem better on paper. The only disadvantages that I see are that I'll have to carry an adapter for my on bike pump, good Samaritans won't have anything to help me, and that it won't catch on and become a dead standard. But it does just seem like Presta but better.

Resurrecting classical trains /n/
Theoretically speaking, if I was an entrepreneuring billionaire and I wanted to bring back one of the great American passenger trains (Super Chief, California Zephyr, Panama Limited, Empire Builder, City of Los Angeles/San Francisco, 20th Century Limited, Broadway Limited, Powhatan Arrow, Coast Daylight, etc.) to run on a regular basis (let's put it at at least two times a month for a start), which option would be more feasible from an economic/technical/legal perspective?

1. Acquire all of the surviving rolling stock (sleepers, dining cars, dome/observation cars, baggage cars, etc.) from the original consist from private owners, heritage railways, and museums, as well as matching surviving locomotives (can be from ones different railroads since thousands of functionally and aesthetically identical EMD F and E units were sold to all Class I railroads). Renovate them as necessary to make them FRA-compliant, obtain waivers wherever possible. Put them into service as a part-luxury train, part-mobile museum.

2. Commission the construction of a replica consist. Building entirely new streamlined cars from scratch, designed to match the internal and external appearance of its original as much as possible, with changes only being made when it's literally required to make the car FRA-compliant/modern user friendly (updated wiring, HEP, power outlets at seats, WiFi support, replacing wooden paneling with MDF paneling etc.). Motive power consists of custom-built Siemens Chargers designed to resemble the original E and F units (streamlining, bulldog noses, matching paint schemes, etc.) as much as legally possible.

>That cylinder is a mass dampener also known as a J dampener in physics. The purpose is to neutralize high frequency low amplitude oscillations.Mass dampeners are currently used in Moto GP and were banned in F1 in the mid 2000s.The mass dampener can also be placed on the fork, above the bottom bracket and as shown on the rear swing arm/triangle on a full suspension bike.
have these been used on road bikes yet? i have a stiff track bike fixie, anything that could improve performance or comfort would interest me. i haven't paid attention to bike stuff lately so idk if it has been mentioned on GCN/GMBN yet. GCN has done a lot of videos on tire pressure so i could see them experimenting with tuned mass dampers.

If steel is so great, why do the companies that make the best steel tubing in the world use carbon for their forks?

If steel is so great, why do the finest steel bikes in the world use carbon forks?

It seems to me that steel has an aesthetic value that cannot be substituted by anything else, but as a material for building bikes, its value decreases the more that is demanded of a component.

Good wheelie bikes /n/
Im wanting to figure out what is it that makes some bicycles have a more comfortable wheelie position than others?
By comfy i mean a point that sits further back and also has freedom of movement before looping

So far it seems higher bars help. And maybe a steeper seat tube?
And i want it to be figured out for a hybrid/gravel bike with an upright position similar to picrel

If you are going to blab on about wheelie bikes, please at least help me understand what it is that makes wheelie bikes wheelie so well so I can find a hybrid that will wheelie well

I'm looking for that "do it all" bike, but I'm kinda lost in the weeds. You have anything from people saying that you can put wider knobbys on a road bike all the way to saying that you need a FS MTB. I currently have a Trek Crossrip LTD, which is an XC bike with 32c wheels. I'm looking to be able to do road rides, but would also like to hit some trails, like picrel which is only a few miles from me. The problem is with trail ratings is that they are more catered to MTB riding. Do you think that I'd be better with either A: upgrading my current bikes wheels/tires to something like a 38-40mm allroad/gravel setup. B: Just buying a higher spec'd gravel bike that's more on the MTB side than the road side and keeping my current bike as more of a road/city bike. Or C: Getting a hardtail MTB and having a nice diversity of styles? I'm completely ignorant about MTB's, but I don't think a FS is warranted for my area. I'm not against them, but they are way more expensive, and higher maintenance, and legit downhill stuff is more of a weekend excursion.

An entry level new bike, that is agreeable to ride, not dragged down by antiquated standards like QR, that you won't regret buying, nor immediately feel the urge to swap out half the components because of cut corners, cost approximately USD $1500 at standard retail prices as of late 2024, give or take a few hundred (depending on the finer details).

Now, the prices are going to go up by at least 20%, and the smaller independent brands are going to go under as only the largest players will have the spare cash to ride out the sudden loss of consumer confidence. The most interesting and original bike products will simply disappear from the market permanently until the next wave of prosperity (which may be entirely concentrated somewhere far away and foreign, so that only the wealthiest of your peers will be able to import and use such goods).

How does that make /n/ feel?

What groupset would you ride if you could get any groupset you wanted for free, but when/if you sold the bike you would have to price it as whatever groupset you ride now. That is, if your financial circumstances were no different and you were subject to the same "rules" as you currently as in terms of other people judging (because we all know unlimited wealth begets shamelessness), what do you choose?

Step-Through Bike Frames /n/
Are there any actual disadvantages to them? They seem to perform as well as standard bike frames but with the advantage of being easier to mount and dismount without the top bar getting in your way. I know they were originally marketed to women who wore skirts because the top bar on traditional bikes got in the way and exposed their panties but it never quite made sense to me why these weren't just the "default" frame style in the first place, especially since most utility bikes and pretty much every single E-bike on the market uses this style of frame.

Railbus photodump incoming /n/
I flew down to the Bay Area to take a journey on the Niles Canyon Railway's mysterious and rarely traveled Eastern branch aboard the M200 Railbus. The last of its kind still operating, the M200 once served the California Western Railroad as a literal schoolbus for children. Today is its first publicly available excursion in several years.
