Around how long do you usually have to do anatomy/figure studies before the major landmarks get engrained into your brain so you can begin stylizing them?
pic rel on my 3rd day of doing them, i noticed when i was drawing anime girls my bodies were always really boring and lacked proper awareness of the major landmarks of the body (i.e. collarbones, hip bones). also, how exactly do you go from doing these to actually stylizing them properly? do i just go back to drawing anime girls like i was before but be more mindful of stuff like "oh right, her hip would be showing more here"

the eye placement as the other anon said. luke having blue eyes not black blobs might throw you off as well, you fixed the nose. the jaw is too long on the ear side, omitting the squareness of hamill. the chinhole/shape is missing and off, it need to be straighter. the hair is missing fullness or rather should be rounder where you straightened it at the top, throwing off the gestalt and the neck is too thin. luke should have boyish looks, but he isnt a boy anymore, this should be present in your drawing as well, despite stylization. i also am only being so harsh (not really) because you threw me into the same pot with the shitposting jeet applefag earlier while giving the thread legit challenges they should try given their skillset. i fell a general challenge might be too much for beginners and as someone said in the last thread and always, /beg/s might actually be left behind, which shouldnt be, despite their retardy.

sorry, maybe this will elucidate what i meant by "the jaw is straighter" - you see on the reference how the corners of the jaw are in line with each other? on yours, you've placed the left corner of the jaw lower than the right corner. it's not a big thing but makes your face look a little tilted, since the jaw will always have a straight line from the left corner to the right.

sorry i didn't explain that well :) if you fix the issue you could also show some of the underside of the jaw like the reference does, hope this helps!! bear in mind im still a super beg myself so please take this with a grain of salt.

discord. a lot of it is just talking to people. i got commission offers before i even really had a fundamentals grasp because of one thing - fandom drawing, so if you want comms, my recommendation is pick a specific interest/fandom and draw for it. the main one i get commissions related to is DND and scale/furstuff.
i see a lot of early on/beginner artists get commissions for stuff like jinx x silco from arcane because they already draw it and people want to see something specific, so they'll buy from someone who already draws the characters/pairing.
the main comms I do are sketch pages but if people like you they will commission you for other stuff outside of your comfort zone to support you.

At the risk of sounding like a Howie, how do you go about doing color studies?
I've spent so much time doing figure drawings and value studies and they help me to learn an absolute ton. Yet I've never done color studies and now it's starting to affect my art quality quite a bit.

Problem is idk how to do them at all. Do you just copy paste the color from your chosen subjects and create color palettes of color you like? Do you just wing it and try to get as close as possible to the original with feeling alone? Do you use gamut mapping and try to disregard the color of the subject and instead try to make the colors harmonize, even if they don't look like your subjects colors?

Any help or guides or even courses someone could point me to would be super appreciated here

the way i did it was unorthodox but whatever it was tricked my brain into understanding color. I took the crayola colors from the wiki and forced myself to color only with those. Finding proxy colors for what i saw in my head helped me. I don’t know why. My guess is that by restricting yourself with colors you learn color faster.

Took some advice moved the eye on our left up. Gave him lighter value in his eyes to imply blue eyes. Hopefully fixed the jaw. Not sure what to do on the baby face. Rounded out the top of the head. Added lighter tone for good measure.

Scanners pump up the contrast and kill all subtlety in your lines. I do use camera scan apps like genius scan if I want to bring a sketch into digital though so I don't use a photo's messed up perspective

Turn the settings to photograph and then I use greyscale instead of mono. It captures the mid tones that way.

tried doing a drawing before bathing of r63 Brick from the same game. it was tough, partly bc I didn't want the bath to get cold, but also because I rarely draw women
I figured the similar outfit to male Brick's outfit of exercise shirt and jeans would be a sports bra and exercise/yoga pants. initially didn't want to do yoga pants but I figured otherwise the two might be too similar
her chest was difficult bc women's breasts aren't a part of anatomy I've drawn much, even clothed, so I sort of guessed. the reference I used of a female bodybuilder seemed to have no breasts and I understand at that level of muscle breasts tend to get overwhelmed by musculature anyway, but seeing as borderlands is a bit stylized that it would be appropriate to maybe make them look more rounded than than a male chest
and not to be sexist, obviously female brick could wear make Brick's outfit and still be a woman bc being a woman isn't a matter of appearance or performing femininity and making all male and female versions dress the exact same would be dull imo

It resonated with my own insecurities. I started taking drawing more seriously this year, started using photo references, changed drawing methods and tools, read and watched some tutorials/lectures and tried following along, doing faces, busts, full body. Stopped trying to force improvement via turd polishing pieces for hours and focused on more pieces instead. I started using pencil and paper because I could sketch a lot faster than digitally, allowing me to practice more consistently, every day, or very nearly. I don't think it's been helping.

Is the anatomy okay with this?
The pic I drew (on the left) is a combination of the two characters on the right.

One of my friends said "Legs too short, or arms too long and heads too big. One of the two" but idk if he's right.

I did make the hands longer because they felt too stubby during line arting, though I'm conscious it does throw off the proportions by elongating them. Ditto, with the head, I scaled it up to make the character "cuter". So like, is the issue just with conscious amendments to the anatomy or a broader deficit?

Keep the interactions with this place to a minimum, an hour passes by like nothing and YOU COULD SPEND THAT TIME DRAWING INSTEAD, HELLO?? Ok, that's all I wanted to say, thanks for your attention, back to the drawing board.

Took a stab at this. I know my art style is quite different than yours, and you probably want her to have proportions that are closer to what you have in your drawing, however, I noticed that your limbs are very skinny as if the clothes are on top of wooden cylinders rather than squishy fatty flesh.

I also do not believe that the foreshortening that you did here was on purpose. I believe that the drawing becoming smaller near the feet is probably because you drew from the head down as you sketched rather than trying to map out the proportions as whole when doing the pose sketch.

I'm not the best at drawing clothes, it's something I need to practise more, sorry. Though the character is also supposed to be skinnier than normal, if it makes any odds.

Also yeah, I tend to start with the head, though I'm trying to get in a habit of mapping with lines first, even if I rough in the head, then actually sketching everything, to try and introduce a step that's more proportion orientated, rather than just jumping straight into sketching.

My hard is too stiff today to do any lines for some reason. Something something my shoulders are in pain for bad sleep.

i don't think they are flaws unless your objective was to draw a 1:1 copy of the reference (why?) , it would be weird if your head was correct from the get go, even with construction things often end up at a different angle. I like doing bodies before drawing the clothes, i like to think that it helps me with the construction/drawing.

I’d like to give you advice but speaking from experience with pencil art you would need to erase more and that eventually tears away at the paper. Personally my strategy with pencil drawings is not to treat it as digital art, do not get attached to a drawing you’re making and try to use the eraser very minimally. Try a pen if you have to.

The reason for this is you will want to do lighter, faster sketches and when you mess up you get another page or move your hand to another part of the same page and try again. This way you can see progress.

That’s the only reason i can see there being to excuse drawing with such dark lines on paper.

You need to draw much lighter in order to be able to erase more often if you want to use an eraser.
