When Ralsei explains what dark worlds really are he shows the visage of FRIEND when talking about what is darker than dark. This implies that FRIEND, whatever it is, only exist during the darkest dark. This is seemingly reinforced with their apperances in game, watch a video on it if you don't know them all. The videos neglect to show the FRIEND inside of the vending machine that smiles and the one on the sweepstakes site, but that is all of them.
We see the cat throughout our own journey, showing up when we are pursuing freedom and things related to secrets, like the mantle game and the mike minigame, queens cellar, etc. Besides the chapter 3 showcase there is no obvious mention of friend, they only show up during more obscure parts of them game.
This leaves me with two options
Either friend is primoridial darkness, a type of darkener that exists everywhere when it gets dark, kinda like a titan. It doesnt really mean anything it's just a "generic darkner" so to speak
Based on their very limited behavior and apperances this doesnt seem too likely, see my logic above and reflect on it yourself
The other option is that they are an omnipresent entity that can only appear "visibly" under certain conditions. They seem to be important. As many others have conjectured, they seem to be this game's version of "satan", or something to it, tempting you towards.... something. What their exact motivations are is uncertain but they are associated with freedom. We know to little about what that is, what the shadow crystals mean, and everything related to this to make a real guess. But FRIEND seems interested into pushing you towards this.
The last third option is that they show up because Kris summoned/encountered them in the past and they know show up to track his progress. It doesn't make sense to call it the big bad yet, but it is mighty suspicous and we should be doubting the value of freedom if it pushes us towards it

the main thing I actually see here is that deltarune shows some of the characters with certain flaws that they overcome at least partially in undertale. Toriel was hiding from her problems in undertale until the accumulated pain and experience from all of that led to her pushing through and leaving the ruins to literally face her issues. In deltarune I have a feeling that she's prone to that having not gone through the events of undertale. Shes a caring and loving person but can get caught up in her avoidant traits.

thats just a retarded thing to say though, we've gotten little hints dropped that paradise may not have been so perfect and we dont know everything about what issues kris may have dealt with other than wishing he was a monster, but the divorce was clearly not a peaceful one.

also this is just pure speculation on my part but I have a feeling the king and queen in chapter 1/2 may have personality traits that are inspired by some memory that kris has of his parents fighting. toriel and asgore both clearly love their children but we know for certain they fought enough to traumatize the tv at least.
