Everyone says successful modern horror movies are always set in the 70s/80s or earlier because of the cell phone issue, I think that is a superficial excuse for the real reason, which is that there is no way to tell a convincing or sensible 'hero story' in a modern diversity environment, and it is very difficult to sympathise with characters who are 'living a lie' pretending their environ of foreigners and transsexuals is normal and worth saving. A cultural backdrop a viewer can relate to and sympathise with requires a racially homogeneous and functioning society of 'normalcy', which then the 'horror' is the protagonist.
Modern life IS the horror.
