if you live in The Big City, it's not only sensible, but smart. If you made the argument that it's unhealthy for the mind, I'd agree with you. It definitely fucks up how you view everything in life, including yourself. But unfortunately, we don't live in small societies anymore, where the "weirdos" who were distant, bitter, ill-tempered, etc. could be kept at an arm's length and still live amongst everyone else. Nowadays, most people are the weirdos, and giving everyone on the street the benefit of the doubt is just naive, I'm sorry, but it isn't an exaggeration to say that we live in a dog eat dog world. If you aren't stepping on someone to get ahead, you're being stepped on.
Whether you're okay with being belittled and underestimated or not is up to you, but me personally, I've grown tired of being passive and submissive in the face of people that couldn't care less about my existence.
