I think its marketing. They've been doing a lot of aggressive marketing lately: Reddit, TikTok, YouTube, fake influencers making the game look super social. I believe that because of theis there are a lot of first time players coming, looking for that exaggerated social aspect they've seen from influencers or because of whatever UB set is their own interest. FNM where I'm at has been either packed or dead, pretty much alternating and when it's packed its usually new players trying it out, often disappointed. 
TL;DR
there are more people trying magic than ever before, but it's become so thematically inconsistent and different from the portrayal made by influencers that it's probably going to die.
