NXT got a comeback by legitimately being a better show. Not necessarily better than AEW, just better than itself. B&G NXT was awful television and the 2.0 rebrand gave it life again. It was the only show with strong YoY for over a year based mostly on word of mouth.
The only main roster bumps it got were for episodes where appearances were advertised ahead of time. Beyond that, no one who watches has illusions that a top main roster guy will randomly show up. In fact, most main roster talents that do are shitters or guys that creative has zero plans for. The only exception was that Becky had a run with the women's title, but that got mixed reactions.
