Easily the greatest modern anime, it's sort of an SoL, but there's really intense shogi matches as well. It's about an orphan kid who's a shogi prodigy, and winds up adopted into the family of a shogi pro. He inadvertently outcompetes the father's biological children to the point of ripping the family apart, and at the age of 16 has to move out in order to keep the household from breaking up. Now he has to play shogi to support himself, but he keeps winding up in situations where it feels like he's destroying people's livelihoods, like one guy is going to quit if he loses and ranks down, one guy is pending a divorce and spergs out on his family when he loses, etc. In the midst of this, he's taken in by the eldest of the Kawamoto sisters, a sultry bar hostess, and through them he slowly learns not to be a self-destructive piece of shit. The story is based on real shogi personalities, like Nikaido is based on a real guy who was sickly his entire life and died at age 29, but managed to become master rank and devoted his life to spreading his love of shogi to everyone. It's strange, it like the anime is constantly on the brink of being complete misery porn, but is paradoxically a healing anime and constantly reigns everything back in.

It's an actual masterpiece. Everyone should watch (and read) it. Also as a side note, this is SHAFT, and if there every was an anime that perfectly played into their hand drawing autism, it's this one. Honestly everything about this feels like a match made in heaven for SHAFT.
