AvP has restand mechanics which turns it into an insane combo loop game where you can 100% bosses in one combo. It's also does NOT have "whiff punishing", it's famous for being quick and snappy and throwing screen fulls of enemies at you. A lot of old beat em ups are dependent on heavy tech and execution, dd som and avp are excellent examples of this.

Once the novelty of real time battles wears off, there's no reason reason to play total war games any more, as much of their true focus is on a purely designed strategic layer. These games feel entirely superficial in their design and appeal, much like paradox. You're better off playing a game published by these guys
