I find D7-8 be the most fun. D10 feels like a job: everyone knows what they're doing and you're expected to adhere strictly to how "you're supposed to play". Even if you fuck up others are generally skilled enough to pick up the slack. At d7-8 half the players dont somehow know what they're doing making it a lot more chaotic and unpredictable. There's enough enemies so you struggle a bit to solo them if things go south. You can take off-meta loadouts without being kicked. You also see a lot more of these off-meta weapons and loadouts (like guy running RR backpack + GL against bots so he can teamreload you and mop up devs with the GL, worked surprisingly well and is still one of my fondest memories)

/twg/ doesnt want you to know this, but the best difficulty options are "Campaign: Hard/Very Hard, Battle: Easy, Battle AI cheats: Hard/Very Hard". This gives enough campaign map cheats so the AI isnt a faceroll due to units or in-battle stats, but easy battle ai means he will aggressively attack any settlement he MIGHT win, meaning tons of kino defensive sieges instead of AI ballooning to 3 armies to take undefended minor settlement. You also end up doomstacking less yourself since AI is constantly on the offensive so you dont have time or need to take that capital with 4 turtling stacks over it: instead you get tons of defensive sieges and land battles.

Video game companies have this weird trend of wanting to drive away their customers. A hockey gamer doesnt want to buy fifa, he wants hockey game. A MMO autist doesnt want cinematic moviegame, he wants MMO autism. A strategy autist doesnt want FPS, he wants Total War and so on.

Yet for some reason when a gaming company grows big enough, they start abandoning their core audience to make something vastly different. As a result you get a product that your repeat customers dont want to buy and is worse than established games of the new genre company tries to make game for. Hence nobody wants to buy the game and commercial failure ensues. Why this keeps happening is beyond me.
