Literally the second game introduced the dark ending boss trope the later games use. And then the fourth and fifth games just escalated it to Eldrich horrors. So basically, it was the standard from the start. Kirby's Dreamland 1 was the only time Kirby was truly just about that. And the people who worked on the game said they always wanted it to be more like Kirby's Adventure. They just didn't have the ability to do it in the first game.

It's no Yoko Taro hellscape of all these interconnecting elements and bleak worldbuilding, but the juxtaposition it has with these extremely cute characters and an art style that's something out of a sugary children's book make it just a little more interesting than usual. Most normies would be stunned if you told them that at some point the Kirby series features the story of a father desperately searching for his supposedly dead daughter only to lose his mind and have his soul become assimilated into a machine doing what it can to turn everything into technology. The reason is because when most people think of a plot like that, their mind goes to something more cyberpunk dystopian, not something like pic related.

If anything, I suppose I can admit that it is a bit of a cheap novelty. We've seen a lot of the whole "ohh, look at this, something cute is actually pretty dark and spooky!!!!1", but I think Kirby as a series makes a difference in the absolute sincerity of how goddamn adorable it still is. Even the scary world-ending abomination summoned by a death cult still has some sort of squishy soft element to it. The art direction is rarely (if ever) compromised by how serious the worldbuilding can get. But even this might get old one day, but for now, I'm still having fun with it. Props to Forgotten Land for doing something a little different instead of going the obvious direction of "space virus comes to this world and kills everything" and instead making it "space virus gets put in a jar and treated like a funny zoo attraction until the people who sealed it up got bored and left it for someone else to deal with lol"

I like that Kirby has neat lore and references that tie things together. Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot really want hard with all that. HAL likes to give fan service this way, which is really nice. It was especially ballsy for how they handled the Planet Robobot final boss. I think most people that played it reacted 'lol this is so random', while the more familiar Kirby fans reacted like 'holy shit its [redacted] from [redacted]'.

I mainly use Cutter and Sword in True Arena, though I used Hammer when playing it when was new. The Three Mage Sisters are 3 opponents using many hectic attacks that do lots of damage if they hit you and are guaranteed to hit your allies with their struggling AI, even when playing as the busted allies with element buffs they can really fuck you up before the other maxed out bosses.

It depends entirely what you want as Kirby is an experimental series with many different gameplay types. But the ones I consider to be the best are Adventure, Crystal Shards, Return to Dreamland and Canvas Curse.
