As far as I know, the idea to "humanize" Nicole in SatAM may have started in 2003, back when lead writer Ben Hurst was planning a revival/movie. There's a chance it wasn't part of the scrapped Season 3 plans a decade prior, despite following up on a few moments where Sonic loses his patience with her.
The way Nicole was written in SatAM, she is an AI whose formal personally gradually becomes more casual around Sonic. Archie was pretty consistent with that depiction.
Nicole's lynx form is first seen in Archie in 2005. It's assumed that it's repurposing the idea of Nicole having her own body...but the Hurst notes weren't posted publicly until 2010, after he died.
Question: when "humanizing" Nicole, was Archie referring to internal DiC notes like Nate Morgan, or was this a coincidence like the Hooligans?
(On that note, I don't think Hurst ever decided on a species. He referred to her as "human" in regards to her emotion and intellect, but he could have just meant "sapient.")

Ian: Ah, I don't know and I hesitate to tap that idea too much because as obnoxious as it is with the whole just the male hedgehogs getting a true super form is, it does put a hard barrier against the kind of power creep and multi-form stuff that plagues things like Dragon Ball. I say this as someone who enjoyed Golden Frieza and Super Saiyan Blue but there's like a bajillion different forms and techniques and whatnot and it gets kind of muddled and convoluted. Then you get into the debate of what's comparable in terms of power. With the super forms you have to have the chaos emeralds. That at least is nice and limited. Yeah there's the 50 rings thing but that's more of a gameplay mechanic. Narratively you have to have all seven chaos emeralds. That is the gate that you have to cross.
If we start introducing other ones then they also need to have some kind of believable restriction so that we don't have a question of well why doesn't Amy just turn into magical girl with giant world-ending hammer whenever there's a problem? Why doesn't Rouge turn into super shogun/ninja/dark version at the drop of a hat? It's kind of like where Shadow is now, like we don't really have a good idea of what his chaos powers are, why doesn't he just drop his inhibitor rings and go Chaos Shadow whenever something appears and just nuke it? So I hesitate to go that way. I wouldn't mind it like once or twice to find an alternate avenue for those who are deserving of a little bit of recognition (Amy) but it opens a door that could lead to problems down the line. You have to be careful with this sort of thing

Ian: Maybe. If we were to make a new alien race, they would have to be approved by SEGA. That includes design, concept, implementation, and everything else, just like any new character.
I believe we would have a little more flexibility, similar to what we had with Tangle and Whisper, but there would still be oversight.
For example, we introduced the Warped Topaz planning to write it out by the end of the story. SEGA liked the idea and told us to leave it ambiguous in case they wanted to use it later.

Penders was so awful that you had people acting like Ian was a true master writer who understood Sonic. The truth is he was more cohesive than Penders, but ultimately still a fan of PENDERS' work. To the extent that Ian struggles to write stories when told to restrict himself to the games.

Flynn: I am not really sure because I don't want to go there. Time travel stories are a mess to deal with. They require a lot of thinking, and what we have gotten in Sonic is already kind of a tangled ball of yarn. So I just don't want to do that. I'm not smart enough to do a good time travel story, to be honest, so I really don't want to go there. In general though, I think Sega generally doesn't want us to mix past and present. So I don't think we're going to see like modern in classic or classic and modern anytime soon. I mean, it's fine when they do it because it's their franchise, but I don't think we're going to be seeing any time hopping anytime soon, so I don't know what the limitations are on that."

I've read a lot of the Japanese replies to this post, many of them have very positive reception to Tangle and Whisper showing up. However something else I noticed that was a common trend (maybe not so positive) was confusion that they show up at all. A lot of them wondering why "comic original characters" are here or "arent you supposed to be american comic characters"? Zebra lasso also had a similar sentiment but went as far as to say they are getting preferential treatment. Others chalk it up to just trying to advertise the comic better in Japan.

There is zero communication going on the JP side that the comics are supposed to be (at last supposedly) canon to the games and that them showing up in a console game may be imminent.

In the eyes of Japanese sonic fans, there is no distinction between Archie and IDW. They are all labeled as "american comics" They have no idea what's going on or the type of control the IDW comics are looking for over the series.

This is a picture of Tails, one of the playable characters in Team Attack Amigo. His running speed was increased for Team Attack Amigo, I wonder if this is the only adjustment they made, or if they did more or planned to do more. Apparently they originally wanted to do multiple full length stories as shown by a recently found test DLC, but they cut it down to what is in Team Attack Amigo

i wonder if the human bias in the 2000s was done for more immersive reasons. The adventure era presented us with the idea that the Sonic world is roughly identical to ours except for the wilderness or interior pockets of society where the world is insane.
The average child playing videogames has never been to the wilderness. They can't verify how fictitious it is (Aside from the blindingly obvious) , but they can recognize that the hub worlds are not that far from what they see at home. This might make Sonic feel more "real" in a way.
Sort of like how the Harry Potter franchise sacrifices logic and reason to make its concept feel like something that could happen in real life but is kept secret from us.

I think there are many reasons, including the build up to it starting from the previous 3D games, alternate play styles, the character redesigns, the American side of the series getting disregarded, Nintendo/Mario fans who always hated Sonic to begin with, and even some dissatisfaction from the Adventure fans at the time. The game being incomplete and glitchy is ultimately what gave everyone a reason (or an excuse) to complain, very few people wanted to defend the game and so it was open to any and all criticism. I understand it, but looking back I don't think it was fair to what the game actually is (since it does have positives after all), and ultimately I don't think it had a positive effect on the series

How do I explain this? Things like the Sonic X sign or Archie comics were included while making it clear they're their own brand. With IDW, this "marketing" feels akin to propaganda where they're inserted into non-comic content without mentioning the comics are their origins. This is deliberate to make the audiences believe this is just part of the normal universe which is why its all over SOA media like the cookbook or TailsTubes. Tails casually mentioning Jewel or the restoration. Winter and birthday art casually showing IDW characters, etc. It either leaves you wondering (like most of the japs I saw) "Is this a comic thing?" "Is it apart of the comics?" or if you're not hardcore you just accept it as part of the overall canon which is the goal of SOA, Ian and Evan. Prime for example was marketed as canon to the games because I guess that's Sega of America's way of wanting to please everyone by tying everything together. I can understand getting annoyed at Sallicole for changing Sally's character to suit a pairing. Making several drastic changes compared to her original personality to the point that SatAM Sally simply wouldn't behave that way in the same situation. Sure. I get it.
