there are a ton of "american small town in the 90s-00s-isms" in deltarune that toby and a lot of his peers would know that a lot of other people just wouldn't, but this is extremely normal in the kind of laid back americana-energy place Hometown's obviously supposed to give off vibes of. Like yeah just about everyone goes to church but they're not like hardcore traditionalist hellfire and brimstone Christians, especially by more modern times, and they actually happily celebrate Halloween and even intermix it with church activities (stuff like "trunk-or-treat" that may have started as an anti-halloween but still let the kids have some fun Christian function decades ago morphed more or less into just 100% normal Halloween just here's a safe stop with lots of candy at church if you're worried about taking your kids to strangers' homes or just want an extra stop with guaranteed goods)

bros, bros, bros. neither of you are wrong about the toriel stuff, you're just taking it in extreme directions. she made plenty of small bad decisions that day and it really is ultimately weird that she didn't try harder to check where Kris was after x amount of time / x hour of the day, and honestly it is really un-toriel-like to me for her to not be worried sick about him but maybe the wine was enough to ease that? and yes he should have a house key, if she was worried he'd fuck shit up without her home then what's stopping him from just going in a window anyway? Idk, there's definitely some small issues. And while I agree a mother is fully allowed to have fun and have dates, it's kinda crazy that they cranked the music SO loud kris could hear it at such a volume from his room later, and the lack of food really was a huge bummer.

but it's all just small hints of toriel's imperfections as a person. she did nothing *majorly* wrong and neither kid's gonna 'hate' her next chapter or anything, it's just toby showing us no one's perfect. and that unlike Undertale (though in my humble opinion it's the same there since asgore's excuse for doing what he did actually was good enough despite how harrowing it was), in DR the Asgore vs. Toriel debate for who's the better parent or who's more at fault is actually going to be much, much closer.

Also, Susie leaving did seem to imply the situation was worse than it really was, I think it's most likely her parents are/were horrible, violent drunks and seeing this pristine perfect mother she'd built up in her head to be flawless even a little drunk was enough to make her run out and have a cry. Poor baby.

Man, I'm still feeling really off about this scene. Like it's obviously supposed to be silly and fun, a breath of fresh air and comedy after the emotional end of the dark world portion of chapter 4, and seeing Toriel like that, having fun and letting loose a bit for once, was so great. Yet Kris acts subtly like he's embarrassed as fuck and super unhappy about it beyond just 'ugh mooom :/' stuff as if it's like seriously somehow traumatic or something, Susie LEAVES IMMEDIATELY in a huff like something got 'ruined' for her about toriel after this chapter otherwise did an amazing job up to this point at building up how much susie LOVES and TRUSTS toriel, and now a huge chunk of the younger / more sensitive faggy parts of the fandom are actually using it as ammo for hating Toriel yet again and acting like she's seriously abusive. All because she dared to get slightly tipsy and have a little bit of fun for herself for once in her life, when she had every reason to believe her child was with his friends and safe at a trusted close family friend's house???? Please help me fucking understand.

I guess it could be cool in retrospect if it's revealed Susie's parent(s) are/were horrible violent abusive drunks, so seeing this even a little kinda shattered this up-to-then pristine image of Toriel she had, but man, not only do we have zero hints of anything to do with her parents still but she better get the fuck over it soon and not ruin this potential wonderful relationship, even potential adoption from this caring loving woman just because of a tiny 'muh trigger!!!!!!!!!'
