The first episode with the borg shows it chasing down the enterprise d at full speed. The defiant is small and part of an armarda of smaller ships meant to confuse and distract the borg. It's not as fast as a galaxy class ship. It is not as fast as a borg ship. SPECIES 8472 is an interdimensional threat with far faster ships than anything in the milky way, because SPECIES 8472 can travel in different spatial dimensions. Hope some of this sinks in.
