Episode 1 is one of the most interesting and atmospheric setups I've experienced in an anime. I lost interest hard for a while when it gets into crime drama but pushed through on the recommendation of a friend. Episode 19 is so sublime that I consider every boring part to retroactively be justified.
The ending is incredibly sad, but good.
I can't promise the whole thing will be worth your time, but I came away glad I experienced it, if only to reach e19 with full context.

How abstract does a game have to be to count as "an abstract"?
1. No theme whatsoever (go, GIPF)
2. "Theme" which has basically nothing to do with the mechanics (Carcassonne, Cascadia, anything by Knizia)
3. Theme which is kind of tied to the mechanics, but you could retheme it without making many adjustments (90% of board games)
4. Theme is inherently tied to mechanics, even if it's not a true simulation (many wargames)
