I'm 36 and the thought of playing video games makes me sort of uneasy now

The only fun left seems to be competitive "e-sports" games.
Which is a shame, because I think single player games as a medium have potential.

As always, Captain of Industry. Things are finally looking good. I sent my army of excavators to clear some space on the mountain seaside. They are just about done and I put down three cargo depot (cargo ships for trading contracts).

The plan is to run an expandable oil refinery along the cliffs and one of the cargo ships will retrieve oil from the oil rig I found with the main ship.

I almost got the oil refinery/power generation side ready. Its so much fun piecing together the bits. I just got the new cooling towers which allow some reusing of the steam from the steam turbines

Finished Call of Duty 4 today. First time since 2007, I think. Been revisiting the old CoDs, finished the first one and UO too.
CoD4 certainly has some traits that mark the beginning of the end, but it was still fun, mostly.
Started playing Cold Waters because there's so little sub sims around.

I am not excited for any vidya because there's nothing that caters to my interests.

Rare day where I got not much going on, planning on a lazy sunday type of vibe. Been playing stronghold crusader lately, might also play some foxhole.

I used to absolutely love video games, its been my favorite hobby since I was a kid. Nothing else ever seemed as fun to me. I've probably played hundreds of games to completion. Even up until my early 20's, I preferred playing vidya to doing anything else. These days, I'm stuck between gaming and everything else in life. I tell myself eventually I'll have the time and money to play anything I want, and that's good enough for me. I don't need a lot out of life, and I'm not looking for anything in particular I haven't already found. Some people spend their entire lives chasing, but I learned pretty early on that life is best spent in the simple passing moments where you can be at peace, and video games is a great outlet for that. It's fine to want more, but don't let that desire for more interfere with happiness which is most often found in simple things.

When did nintendo go to shit? I am too young to have played the negro64 when it came out but never had a lunchbox cube when they were around. GBA was great and if SNES was like it I would say SNES was peak. Only 64 game I played as kid was the mario 64 DS version. Why do oldfag millenials wank the N64 so much?

Fell into a brief spiral of playing Rampart. Theres a neat jp only version on nes with little story campaigns. Easy being about red riding hood, normal is a fire emblem looking guy on a generic fantasy quest and hard mode is sengoku stuff.
Then theres the gameboy version that we did get in the west but it was a very bland and safe version. In japan it had slimes, gigantic knight enemies and a few bosses. Here it has standard knights, siege towers and nothing.

Do any of you put a lot of money into your machine? Or do you upgrade regularly? It always feels like a waste and I'm unbelievably picky when I upgrade every four years or so.

I'd never played a Mega Man game so I thought I'd try Mega Man X (SNES).
I was doing really, really shit, but I eventually managed to get through the 8 bosses! ... but then discovered that the last stage is like 10x longer than any individual stage, and I can't even get past the third(?) boss, the bigass spider. There's like a dozen bosses after that.

So anyway, I think I'm much, much too shit for Mega Man which is sad. I didn't realize I was this shit.

Integrated graphics are way better than they used to be, but they still suck compared to anything with a recent-ish gpu. A good compromise between performance, cost, and portability would be finding a used 14-inch ASUS G14 gaming laptop with the RTX 3060 gpu. You can find them on ebay/mecari/fbmarketplace sometimes for not much more than the price of a steam deck. Not many alternatives to that one, unless you go for something larger.

One nice thing about the steamdeck though is that performance is often well documented for each game, so you at least know what you're getting.

Newer games can be difficult to get into for me as well. Some of them try to be too many stimulating things at once. Some of the simple ones look clean and arcade-y, but overly hold your hand in subtle ways that gets kids hyperstimulated and 30+ gamers frustrated, like the jingling keys thing.

Retrotink is an upscaler. It upscales older consoles to 4k better than tv upscaling, and also adds scanlines and filters that are damn near close to a CRT TV. Here I have a filter applied for scanlines, and they have a few for LCD grid settings too. Imthis is also in HDR and honestly it looks surprisingly fucking good. I've been playing Super Monkey Ball for the first time (Banana Mania, to be more precise), a game series that I've wanted to try for a long time. Since AAA is crap now everything is designed to run on a ps4 since ps5 has backwards compatibility. If you have a decent PC this gen is pointless. You'd have to be a total idiot to own a ps5 or switch 2 and literally insane to own an xbox.

Nothing, trying to figure out why my graphics card is crashing in Cyberpunk2077, Avatar Frontiers of Pandora and Final Fantasy XV.

For whatever reason these games just cause straight up crashes whilst other similarly demanding titles don't. So I'm writing up a report to send to my card manufacturer for RMA process about weird isolated examples like this as being an example of why I have hardware failure. I don't like my chances of being greenlit for approval in GPU replacement since they'd just likely use fur mark or MSI kombuster, 3D mark benchmarks to test for a faulty card, which wouldn't display the issues. I think these games might actually just be some of the most hardware demanding games as to why it happens compared to other titles, they're even harder to run than dedicated raytracing synthetics for some reason. Maybe I should have tried KCD2 for good measure, but I feel like I have a case with 3 games. Just hopefully it gets approved. I might have to go back to playing consoles for the time being whilst this is being sorted out, hopefully it is sorted out that is. It's such a goddamn headache.

Rebirth is literally the only game I've ever just said "I genuinely don't have time for this because I'm a working adult" for.

It's a cool game and I actually genuinely appreciate a JRPG having downtime for you to just be in the world or have the characters interact outside of high stress scenarios, but Rebirth had so much of it so spread out that it became actively frustrating. You feel like you do one thing per hour and actually attempting to travel by foot only makes things take even longer. It's a shame, because some of the sidequests are great. I loved the one where you have to chase a dog and Barret goes on a long talk about how much he misses his daughter.

I just can't bring myself to put the time in to do it properly since I could finish like 10 other games in that time, and I don't want to skip the side stuff either as I feel like I'm missing shit I'd potentially enjoy. So it's a catch 22

Sometime this year. I also had some weird black texture bug in metro exodus enhanced edition if I maxed out the raytracing setting and shading options. But that could also be an engine bug since I find out AMD users complained about it 3 years ago on forums. I might be able to chalk that up as random. But the others I can't.

The strange thing it's completely situational. I could play Alan Wake 2, Spider-Man 2, Space Marine 2, Black Myth Wukong, RTX portal maxed out at 4k all without issues including making use of path tracing in them. So it's the strangest problem I've ever encountered of it all being situational and the right games to cause errors. I've generally tested games that are known to be harder to run for whatever reason.

There's so much more you can play on older hardware like that. And since you probably have decent drivers for the hardware you can afford to have WinXP which lets you play all of that without VMs or DOSBox.
