I see a lot of people simping Dess lately.
I just want to remind everyone that pre 3+4, when most people didn't even think about Dess, I on these very forums declared Dess as my exclusive wife, whatever her design might be.
For my faithfulness, I was rewarded with hard confirmation of tomboy punk rock Dess.
And she is all mine.

That just adds to this idea. Both Kris and the Knight know that it's a lost fight, but The Knight in this case wants Kris to fight long enough to crack the Shadow Crystal and Black Shard off. So she makes the Sword Game stuff and puts Kris through a painful game just to see their BURNING EYES before handing off the Mantle which acts as a handicap for the fight they're about to have.

The only issue would be why she needs to have them break it off in the fight instead of giving it to Kris then and there. But that may be because either she CAN'T hold back against them for some reason or because she needs to know they're strong enough before letting them have it.

Anyone got the image of the program showing that the slash in the Knight fight is called "spr_roaring_knigt_slash" or whatever it is? I know someone had an image.

If you REALLY wanna bring in the demon shit, you could say it hoped into all this by taking a form Dess would want to see, similar to Seam. But the point is that the Friends serving Dess as a coping mechanism is just too fucking perfect of an idea here.

They're working together in their roles for the prophecy.
The Shadow Crystal stuff is something Dess is doing on a more personal level. She's the one pushing the idea of freedom onto Kris. She's trying to set a fire in him to overcome her and the Prophecy in secret while in public they play their roles out.
Her giving you the Shadow Mantle lets you have a chance to fight her enough for the Black Shard and Shadow Crystal. Right after you manage that, the fight is forced to end.
ERAM even says that they have to stop playing cause "WE BOTH have work to do". She's talking about the coming fight at the end of the chapter right next to the game room.

Basically think of the Shadow Crystals as a "Plan B" that Dess is pushing for while still serving whatever/whoever is making them go down the path of the Prophecy.

I am scared of Chapter 5, so much shit can go wrong.

I mean, Jesus Christ, Gerson was powerful as hell, and he was literally a dead dude, imagine how much trouble a huge pissed off goat man could cause in a Dark World, and with knowing what Noelle can potentially do, what will happen when she sees her father die? Everything is gonna go to shit, everything. God, if the chapter 4 cliffhanger felt depressing, I can't imagine how bad the one at the end of 5 is gonna be.

If the knight IS Dess, why is she doing all this? What's her endgame?

Could be that this is what Dess felt like. The BlackShard sounds similar in the Light World too:
