Going against multiculturalism and immigration was a big no no before 2015-2016
Only literal fascists or far-right parties opposed immigration, and we're talking about a time where being a far right chuddie wasn't the norm, it was quite extreme.
Also, this is from Italy perspective, so in a situation that is MUCH earlier than Britain (we have our 2nd and 3rd generation migrants now, they're like 5th gen.. ) if you're a native you don't really care that much about 1st or 2nd generation migrants. They're adult, they do jobs normal people don't want to do, can't speak the language, don't hang out with natives, it's like they live in a separate bubble so it's very easy to "ignore" their existence. Especially if you're middle class or upper.
It's with the following generations that you see something is changing very rapidly. Suddenly you see kids, teenagers, entire families, mixed couples, and society around you start to change, TV programmes aimed at non-natives, kids in school are 30% called Mohammed or Raùl or Esteban, and you're like "wtf just happened?" all in a span of 6-7 years.
I'm saying this as a non polfag, in fact i don't have any problem with migrants if they don't break my balls and respect our values (and they usually do that) but yeah the process you're mentioning was relatively fast.
