you're describing reactive gameplay
and it's a recipe to lose a lot
early meta in pvp games rewards initiative a lot more than reactive play
for example in a newly released fighting game, players who play a character that has a spammable projectile or a move that takes out half the hp bar of the opponent tend to shoot up in ranks very high
they don't know any matchup and have massive gaps in knowledge because well, the game is new
but they win a lot because they don't care about all that shit
similarly sword and dragon and rune and portal dont need matchup knowledge right now and tend to shoot up in ranks and groups very easily
