This is what they originally intenteded hollow knight to be
They designed the game around 3 masks from the beginning. They only upped it to 5 as a last minute decision. Back then, it was probably the right move as the lessened difficulty probably helped it go mainstream, but now that they've made it they have no need to pull punches at all. You start with 5 masks but it may as well be 3 because every enemy that matters deals 2 pips right out of the gate. I just got my fourth mask shard, so I'm up to 6, but that still means I die in 3 hits from every boss lol. Only the fractured skull is able to act as a crutch, but even that isn't enough most of the time. Also, it's basically garunteed that by the time you have something like 8 masks, you'll be dealing with 3 pip damage enemies and bosses lol

Want to know the shocker? If they left in the 1 contact damage on vast majority of bosses and left the 2 damage on specials, the game would feel much more forgiving and fighting would actually feel like a smart use of resources. The enemy HP is fine as a variety of enemy types start becoming easier once you have upgrades. It just feels like the Devs just decided to make the first round of gameplay akin to that of NG+ (where you have all upgrades) and kind of forgot to put on the training wheels for the first half of the game. There's also the EHP problem with your upgrades, which would be easily solved once you... Lower the damage.

The one thing I don't really understand is what's the point of giving the player 5 hp and then make bosses deal 2 dmg per hit. Its such a toxic design. The first HP up does nothing. You 3 hp heal is effectively 2 hp heal. Its like a masterclass in designing the worst possible scenario for the player.
Other than that the game is pretty fun.

I'm pretty far along the game compared to most people, I beat the mechanic dancers and I'm doing a bunch of sidequests (specially a nail upgrade one) before searching for the main one.
The damage of enemies and obstacles is stupid enough, but the worst part is their health.
Why do I have to spend so much time fighting every single trash mob? There's a long corridor at the top part of the city where there's this row of big "violin" fighters, You basically have to run full speed and pogo on them to avoid them and go to the other side for exploration, otherwise you waste like 10 minutes fighting 3 of those enemies with ridiculous HP pools.
The HP is ridiculous in every enemy, but there are segments like that one I mentioned that make me feel the game wasn't playtested at all
Also I've thought they've made the HP pools like this because they intend you to spam the stupid tools, but all I've found feel so bad to use

if you talk to the butler he will tell you hints for each one. it's a bit annoying because you have to keep going back to him because he only gives hints for one at a time, and I personally haven't found any close elevator, I always have to take a huge trip to him from the bottom left elevator
first two are rather easy (although lots of people might have randomly skipped the 1st ingredient npc, it has to do with mossberry concoctions).

It does a pretty good job organically teaching you the bare minimum to progress, you can tell its heavily focus tested because they lock you in confined areas where there's things an average player might overlook, while still leaving room for optimisation via tools or mastering your movement by doing things like chaining your dash strike into a dive kick. (A lot of enemies try to distance themselves from you and you have a lot of ways to aggressively close that distance) This also adds a sense of slow and deliberate exploration versus just zipping through the levels ignoring everything once you've got the area mapped, which adds a natural feeling if progression instead of arbitrarily feeding the player upgrades every 10 minutes like a child's game because the level design can't hold their interest on its own. It's about as good as a nonlinear platformer where the player can traverse levels both backwards and forwards can be.

Even more so if you're back in an early area since you'll be more leveled up and everything dies in one hit. It's the complete opposite. Because shit takes a year to kill, you just jump or avoid combat as much as possible to get to where you're going. This will eventually even out in late-game, but a lot of your entire playthrough will be condensed into the following:

Yeah I fought him with just as little upgrades, managed to get him after like 10 tries, hes a shit boss because its very RNG dependent on the type of enemies he spawns, the fat flying ones that do the aoe attack are a pain in the ass with him, but you can down strike them to the ground, then his slam kills them in 1 hit. Lucky spawns are when he summons the ground ones. Try not to drag the fight out and kill him ASAP, because if it drags out you will just get overwhelmed with enemy spawns.

It's "hard" in all the wrong reasons. Your able to be hit multiple times very easily and quickly, you nearly always take 2 damage so can only take 3 hits at most during most miniboss and boss fights. You are forced to stand still to heal (with different optional ways to heal later) and enemies can and will charge and attack you or throw long range shit. Forces you to be passive with skills because they consume the same resource; the throwing weapons are good though. And so on.

It's not "challenging" it's annoying. I'd rather have 4 HP and be able to take 2 2 hits or 4 1 hits. Would just make the flow of the game so much more enjoyable.

That’s the dumbest critique I read all day. Not a single boss cancels their combo to hit you when you are healing. All bosses commit to their moves and have reliable cooldowns after each move in each of their phases. You can even heal while in the air for way more save openings. Silkmoves are a reward to letting you burn down bosses faster if you are good enough not to need your heals (or as silver bullets like the silk aoe against multiple flying fuckers). And there’s not even that many bosses doing double mask damage to begin with.

Replacing the downward strike with an inferior 45Β° angle dashing attack only to add the original attack behind a 500 analbead pricewall was certainly a choice. Or having double damage take effect by the 3rd area for everything including the environment. Or having more enemies in tight spaces. Or spamming enemies during bosses. Spamming attacks. Or literal input reading especially on flying enemies.

I'm pretty bad at video games and i've found the difficulty perfect so far. Widow gave me some real trouble but I eventually figured it out.
People whining about "le two damage" but don't realise the game is actually operating on a traditiomnal three-hit system, then also not using any of the ranged or defensive tools the game throws at you.

My only real complaint is that corpse running is sort of lame and overplayed at this point, and i'd rather some sort of basic life system was built in to give you the occasional freebie death if you've been doing well for a while.
In a game about exploration this would make taking strange routes or hitting challenge rooms a bit smoother.

The way I see things is that these burst high damage spells are something you pull out with the mentality "I need to kill this nigger before he kills me", but if you are good enough to not get hit this is moot. The damage increase is only noticeable on the early game mobs, which go from dying in three hits to dying in two. The rest will always require a minimum of three until you can get the oil from the Citadel and in those cases it only takes a few certain enemies from four-to-five hits to three hits. The nail is ridiculously weak without the Hunter crest upgrade and then nearly half of your tools and traps are downright ridiculously powerful, but you'd rather save all that power for bosses, even if you have all the pouch upgrades...

Tool pouch has two types of upgrades. First is the damage and second is capacity. When you have two in both, i've found most of the more powerful traps to be absolutely ridiculous (Namely the caltrops and spikes on grounded bosses) and quickly start overtaking the nail on many encounters. The problem is that in terms of shell shard costs, they're expensive as shit so if you spend all of your tools with two equipped you can easily look at anywhere between 100-150 shards per refill on a bench.

I think the issue is that unlike the first hollow knight, the game feels way more linear. Your only objectice during act 1 is to go to the citadel so it feels like there's only one way to progress, while in HK, your objective is to get 3 dreamers which are scattered around the map so it incentivizes you to go different ways.

I think this game has a problem of audiences.
If you liked Hollow Knight for the late game bosses or shit like the DLCs (which were all either boss rushes or extra hard bosses), then you probably like the difficulty spike in Silksong.
If you liked HK for the expansive world exploration and getting lost, then the difficulty is just a chore that's getting in the way.

I think all the combat improvements are really neat, but I'm in the latter camp and it's been rough. I felt like I spent hours today doing basically a glorified boss rush, nothing but obnoxious runbacks and bosses over and over with no new upgrades and barely any progression to speak of and I was almost ready to quit playing. Thankfully it improved after that hump and it's been enjoyable again with more of an exploration focus, at least for now.

I'm in the middle of act 2 and game is good, only thing I would say was shit was lack of rosary beads at the beginning of the game and bench before last judge being a bit too far.
