Halloween costume/decoration /diy/
Hello! I need some ideas for Halloween costume theme and also a guide or some advices on how to create this costume. I have never done costumes particularly, so it can be even just a cool mask, not the full suit. My goal is to be more scary than funny, so the costume should be threatening raththan goofy. Also some advices on how to decorate my flat+/doorway would be super good. Thanks in advance!

As I know literally nothing about plumbing I'm curious what I can look into to even get an idea of where and how to get started.

Purchased a 240z in decently shit condition as my 2nd project car. First was just suspension, brakes, and interior work. Now I will be doing a complete tear down, fixing dents, repairing rust holes and such, and going through the process of putting it all back together with new parts and upgrades.

I've never done body work before and am not really sure where to start. Is there a good place do research with specifics on how to fix rusted holes and repair body panels back to a stock look?

Idea for cheap van heater Archived /diy/
So i've got one of these glorious bad boys right here, i use it in the day in a off grid cabin with a mix of off road diesel and hydraulic fluid i get from loggers for free. The thing is the exhaust wastes half the heat. So i i had an idea:

The exhaust pipe is the same size as the pipe in a old baseboard hot water heater radiator. So why not use one of those radiators as the exhaust pipe? I'd put it vertically in a corner then have it go outside at the top. As long as it was air tight i can't see why it would not work to significantly increase the efficiency.

Note: i NEVER use it at night for safety reasons and because it kills my battery when the sun isn't out.

Creating Replica Macys Day Float Archived /diy/
As a longtime admirer and enthusiast of the Macys Day Parade I want to show my dedication to the craft. I have one month to complete this starting today. It is imperative that I finish this on time so that my efforts can assist the parade. I had some bad luck in previous years and want to give back to my community so I have a few questions.
-How should I replicate the vehicle and should I go for function over form
-How do I build a safe enough stage that it can be stood on by a real person
-How can I wire speakers to equally broadcast audio around the float
-Is it legal in AZ to parade in the street if I wanted to do a test run
-What material can last 6 hours for a parade in different weather conditions
-How to make sure it doesn't catch fire
-If you have a suggestion please to a step by step breakdown of how it will fit within my time
I've asked ChatGPT and it has given me answers in meters instead of feet which I am measuring in. If anybody has any pointers on measuring the female physic without a reference please reach out.

upstairs neighbor's exersize bike vibrating the house Archived /diy/
upstairs neighbor bought an exercise bike that is vibrating the whole house and my ears for 90minutes at a time.

i live in a 100year old house/apartment with roommates and we are underneath another 5roommate apartment/flat. the house has really good sound proofing as i almost never hear the neighbors upstairs, maybe i hear their dog trampling around from time to time. well i woke up at 8am one morning to loud cyclic vibrating above my bed. sounds a lot like a fridge with a bad compressor ...or a flywheel. i had to get out of bed and do my morning routine in living room. very annoyed, i searched reddit for folks with similar issues, it seems a lot of people complain about neighbors upstairs making noises with treadmills and exercise cycles as well as a lot of upstairs folks asking if its okay to buy/use treadmill/cycle and the general consensus was that its an asshole move.

when the noise ended i knocked on neighbors door and told her its really loud and very bothersome, she seemed somewhat responsivell and sympathetic. i suggested returning it and buying one without a loud flywheel - she said she would just not use it first thing in the morning, i then asked if she could at least heavily pad under the machine. well its the next day and it sounds she has ass padding dulled the noise a bit but the vibration is still incredibly bothersome.

any suggestions on how to proceed forward? i can try an drown out the noise with loud music but that will affect other folks in the house hold. i was thinking i could ask her to stand in my bedroom/livingroom while her roommate pedals the bike so she knows how loud it is. is it the flywheel making the noise? is anyone here educated in flywheels, house vibrations, etc? are there exercise bikes that dont have loud flywheels? id reallly hope i could convince her to trade it in for a different model. is this something i could ask my landlord to intervene with? do i have a valid complaint or do i just need to get over it?

Wood paneling my truck Archived /diy/
I'm replacing and adding some of the USB ports in my Tacoma and figured it'd be easier to replace this piece of flimsy plastic rather than cut it up to fit the new ports/switches I have. I plan on using wood since it's cheaper and easier to work with, but I'm looking for recommendations on the kind of wood/stain to use. I have some scrap 2x4s I can cut and sand down, but I am not opposed to getting new wood.

I have pliers, wire cutters, screwdrivers, Bobby pins; access to basically any tool that you could feasibly be needed.

Favorite material Archived /diy/
What's you favorite material to fix/make things?

I recently got some plastic beads that melt under hot water and become a mouldable plastic. It's great!

epoxy putty is nice too, I like that i can fill in small gaps (holes in a part or to connect two parts.

I did some wood carving, it was okay, but never turned out great.

I like the idea of 3d printing, you can edit designs, but I heard to many bad stories about how much work it is to get it working. Maybe I get a 3d printer next year, but a higher priced one that doesn't need all the tinkering that the cheaper printers need.

pic not so related duct tape is okay, but never as good as I hoped. It's only good for the first week, after that it becomes a gooey mess. Clear packing tape is good enough and cheap enough that I can use twice as much tape.

Would why not build a sealed, concrete water tank instead of temporary pvc tanks that you need to replace every 10 years?
Would the extra structural material be that much heavier than the water itself?

Is concrete a good business to get into? I'm a general carpenter and have experience doing pretty much everything but I really like doing concrete and I'm thinking of getting my contractors license and kinda focusing on concrete. The problems are that I think the field is very oversaturated with Mexicans in my area and also I am not a good finisher so any time I did flatwork I'd have to hire day finishers to do the work. But i get a tone of side jobs doing small concrete things and I think I could expand that and start doing bigger jobs.

I'd like to do my own re-roof of a small older house with semi-complex roof.

But it might take me a while on my own, and area gets fairly frequent rain.

Seems like its possible to do a Bit At A Time re-roof with regular asphalt and fiberglass shingles and tar paper, and could slip paper under existing roof and be OK for a few days, but not sure.

WTF you guys say? Better to hire a roofing company that has a crew to bang it out in 1 or 2 days?

Also, how ghetto is roofing over old roof? IIRC Code is you can have 3 layers of shingles. Seems like that would be good for extra insulation and protection from hail.

How to improve air flow in my basement bedroom with no windows and 1 door? Archived /diy/
I'm finding that I struggle a lot with sleeping and doing certain things that necessarily lead me to believe that my bedroom has bad air flow. My bedroom is in the basement of my house, has no windows, and exactly one doorway in the opposite corner from my bed. We do have a vent system but it's old and doesn't have A/C, only heating, which we never use, so it's basically a static non-variable.

I always keep a fan on blowing in air from the door at night, but of course that doesn't help. What can I do to fix this problem? I need to be able to breathe better.

Ways to clean particles off driftwood Archived /diy/
This is besides sanitizing with bleach water etc. (I will be doing that later, although these driftwood are to mount things, not to be near animal life.)

It's damn hard to locate every rotten spot in a large driftwood like the example pic, then chisel it out and hose with a spray nozzle.

I'm looking at:

- Sandblasting with walnut or something relatively soft
- Pressure washing with a relatively low-PSI machine (1000-2500, idk).

What do you suggest? I might be selling stuff put on these driftwood, so I want to clean them up pretty good.

Ant formicarium buildalong Archived /diy/
I want to build an ant enclosure, more formally known as a "formicarium" myself because ant enclosures are overpriced as shit and the materials needed are pretty cheap all things considered.
I'll document it here similarly to a cookalong thread in /ck/, so whoever is interested can come along for the ride.

I'm also a rentoid and only have shit tier tools, which both means if you want to do what I'll do in this thread it'll be easy with minimal equipment, and I'll likely fuck up, meaning you get to at least laugh at me.
We'll build 2 (ideally) ant enclosures; one made of ytong (a porous building material) and the other made of grout.

Picrel is what I got for the project, all pretty cheap materials. Price estimates will be behind the items.
>For the Ytong nest
This is probably the cheapest nest you can build, and surprisingly decent for that price.
- 1 block ytong. This one is 60x5x20 cm big and cost me 1.50€. Density of 0.5 g/cm^3 iirc.
- Acrylic or plastic sheet (25x50x0.2cm for me) 3€, or picture frame (1.5€)
- 8 Magnets that are somewhat flat at the top (4€/6, so 5.33€ for 8)
That's ~10€ for the entire nest or less.
>For the Grout nest
- See-through plastic container (3€)
- Grout (7€/2kg, you need maybe a quarter, also if you order in bulk it's much cheaper, let's say 3€)
- Sand (Free or 1€)
- A cheap small plastic container (1€ for 6, say 0.5€)
- Plastic drinking straw (0.2€)
- Metal mesh (How fine depends on species, at least 30 mesh, 7€ for 4 A4 pieces, we'll use maybe 1/8th of one sheet, say 1€ total)
That's also ~10€, though slightly more initial cost as you likely have to buy more than you need for these things.
>Tools and misc stuff
You'll need a drill, a saw (optional but helps), and a chisel or screwdriver you don't care too much about.
I also got some fake plants for decoration later.

Why does my power go out when I have a 1000w microwave and a 2000w induction cooktop running both off the same plug board?
How's that different to having two different wall plugs?
Do I need to rearrange my wiring because I'm scared of fire and shit?
Like, split high power things between different wall plugs?

Moisture Meter. Help Please. Archived /diy/
Mom wants me to go under the house and check the moisture content of the beams and joists and such. Legit concern given it's a crawl space closed in by a brick foundation (with vents, but still). She bought a meter, but it's garbage (plus or minus 4% error range when the difference between "dry" and "wet" is only 5%; also "contactless" with 9 different settings for wood depending on the density with no setting for southern yellow pine and a method for determining which setting to use depending on the moisture content of the wood and it's weight vs volume, which if I knew those things I wouldn't need the meter in the first place).
House is a bit over 100 years old. Beams and joists are almost certainly southern yellow pine. I just want a meter I can poke into the wood and it will give me % reading that's reliable and not "range of error might mean an okay reading is actually not good". I want to take multiple readings over multiple days to be sure of influences like weather and ground moisture (structure is close to the ground, it's a bit more of a belly crawl space than a crawl space). Does anyone have recommendations/experience with meters?
Please and thank you.

/mcg/ - Microcontroller General: Serious Devboard Edition Archived /diy/
Previous thread: >>2909001

Here we discuss microcontrollers (MCUs), single board computers (SBCs), and their accessories, such as Atmel mega and tiny AVRs (Arduinos), PICs, ARM boards such as blue/black pill STM32, ESP8266/32s, RP2040, Raspberry Pi, and others.

For general electronics questions (power supplies, level shifting, motor driving, etc.) please ask /ohm/.

>where can I find verified quality microcontrollers and other electronic sensors or parts
digikey.com
mouser.com
arrow.com
newark.com

>but that's too expensive
aliexpress.com (many parts here are fake, particularly specific parts out of stock in the above sites)
lcsc.com

>I need a part that does X and Y, with Z specifications. How can I find it?
use DigiKey's or Octopart's parametric part search. Then purchase from one of the sellers listed above.

>how do I get started with microcontrollers, where should I start?
There is no defined starting point, grab a book and start reading or buy an arduino off ebay/amazon and start messing around. There are a plethora of examples online to get started.

If you are a licensed plumber, electrician, union Carpenter etc. please chime in.
Do you have the energy to do home projects outside of work?
Do you keep your work/hobbies separate?
