Thread 2043128 /n/
This thread is for talking about railways, and things related to railways, in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - that means we're all about big intercity trains, modest rural trains, long freight trains, trips, tracks, trams, subways, stations, you get the idea. Trains are cool.

If you're planning a journey, take a look at the nationalrail.co.uk/ journey planner - tell it where you're headed from and to, and it'll show you your options before handing you over to a train company so you can buy a ticket. Doesn't matter which train company, they'll all charge the same price for the same seat on the same journey. Overseas visitors - trip.com and thetrainline.com are your best option.

Here's a few links:
~New rolling stock currently on order, listed (trainlogger.co.uk/units/)
~A Visual History of Railway Rolling Stock in Great Britain (gaelan.me/br-stock/)
~The Man in Seat 61 (seat61.com/) - easily the best rail travel resource out there.
~Geoff Marshall (youtube.com/@geofftech2) - likes trains. Mostly harmless.
~Jago Hazzard (youtube.com/@jagohazzard) - London train history. Ditto.

...and some cool 'open data' stuff:
~Realtimetrains (realtimetrains.co.uk/) - live train timetables: ideal for keeping on top of ETAs and platforms.
~Openrailwaymap (openrailwaymap.org/) - not quite 'Google Maps for railway infrastructure', but close.
~TIGER (https://tiger.worldline.global/home/) - live departure boards.
~Traksy (traksy.uk/live/) - live signalling information.
~London Underground Live (www.londonunderground.live/) - a real-time, geographically-accurate Tube map.

What's happening?

Europe becoming walkable again /n/
As you guys may know, theres now huge subsidies coming from the WEF or the EU to remove car traffic from city areas

its a bit sad because some of these towns and cities used to have extremelly walkable main streets in the early 20th century, beautiful cobblestone pavements, etc, and it was all removed for cheap asphalt when cars became the thing. Now the pedestrian pavement is often just cheap concrete or modern materials imitating older cobblestone.
You even see some retarded mayors destroying an entire 19th century park to replace it with concrete and fake grass and it just breaks my soul. How can we conserve and preserve true traditional urban planning and 19th century walkable standards?

Both the footage and the tempo if that of the '60s, so do NOT expect some twitch footage and on point editing.
But, I think you all would appreciate it, or - at least - should see this!

ps: use auto-subtitles. While at some point it it definitely an 'eh', it is better than nothing.

Something sad about Philadelphia transit history /n/
We are the most walkable city in the USA
We have pretty good public transit for the USA

BUT something sad is when I go to cities like SF and El Paso and Dallas among others I see old Philadelphia trolley cars. Yes, it's well know Philadelphia's trolley cars are world famous and we sold many of them off to other cities when we dismantled some lines. I've seen them in person in these cities. It just makes me sad but also a bit proud my transit history is all over the country I guess.

I just want people to know that. That yes... Philadelphia trolleys are everywhere. It's a bitter sweet moment

Oh by the way... you didn't think pic related was Philly did you? Nope... that's El Paso with a Philadelphia street car. Imagine how that feels for Philadelphians.

Helicopter training and work after training /n/
I want to become a helicopter pilot. I live on the West Coast of burger land and I am not sure exactly what jobs are available to me after 150 hours. Everything I was able to find requires the 2000+ hours of flight time.

So, my question is, should I be under the impression I can get a novice level job after flight school, or should I plan to commit a huge amount of my time and financial resources to get that 2000+ hour mark so I can apply for those $114k+ jobs that seem to be all I can find?

I am not sure what other certifications I would need, and I'm open to input, however, I want this to be my career for the rest of my life, I want to enjoy it, love my job, and possibly build a personal company around it.

Can I get some advice that maybe isn't found in a youtube video on general flight school questions to ask?

How is one supposed to find a comfy bicycle saddle? /n/
I currently have a very basic one that came with the bike (pic rel). It's at proper height so I get zero pressure on the perineum, but if the terrain doesn't require me to get up every couple of mins, I quickly get sore sit bones. I wanna do some touring (min 50 km daily) so that won't do. So, I measured them bones and set about finding a new one.

Thing is, I have zero experience with other saddles and have no clue what to look for. It seems like saddles under 50€ aren't worth looking at, but it also seems like I'll have to buy multiple either way until I find the right one. It baffles me that saddles go up to 300€ and there's never a way to try them out. Am I just supposed to waste money until I luck into one that fits? Is there at least a flowchart?

Bikelights general /BLG/ - StVZO edition /n/
In which we discuss the Bikelighting culture (Fahrradbeleuchtungskultur) of our countries.

Here in Germany, because of the Danger, it is not allowed to have a blinking Taillight. This is also the Reason that all emergency Vehicles in the World have blinking Lights. By attracting other dangerous night Vehicles to crash into the Ambulance, instead of the civilian Vehicles, it spares Drivers in smaller Vehicles, where the Occupants are less able to administer emergency self-Aid. This is the Consequence of what we call a „high trust Society“; our culture of Politeness dictates the most Risk to the most capable Roaduser. The same Expectation is extended to Police and Construction Engineers who are paid more for occupational Hazards such as a blinking Light.

Do you have a Law about blinking Bikelights in your Country?

If I passed you, don't take it personally. It's because you're slow, weak, and have no stamina. No, don't look at my bike. I could smoke you any day, even you were riding a Colnago Gioello, and I could do it on a $100 BSO from Walmart. Little man, learn to take defeat gracefully. I won, fair and square.

If you passed me, chill out dude, you're such an insecure tryhard. You wasted all that money to win a race that only exists in your head. Sure I could have been a pro, still could if I'm being honest, but that kind of thing doesn't interest me, I have nothing to prove to myself. So why should I try to prove anything to others, let alone you? Stop and smell the roses, that's my philosophy.

Thread 2057537 /n/
If all children's (geared and break-pad) bikes were banned and everyone rode fixies (adult bikes), then we wouldn't need any of the polarising debate over 'bike infrastructure'. We wouldn't need to slow down traffic through cities or dig up roads and pavements, everyone would be a lot safer and bikes could flow freely among cars.

Is it finally time for governments around the world to ban geared bikes (at least for people above the age of say, 10) and give up on the idea of seperate bike and car infrastructure, letting all modes of transport to flow freely among eachother?

Passenger cabooses /n/
Why weren't these a thing more often in the heyday of railroads?

>gives freight trains an additional source of income
>passengers can presumably pay for tickets less since freight trains usually run on slower schedules
>allows for mixed trains without the need to pull a coach from regular passenger service
>can be coupled to the back of a regular passenger train during periods of high demand, the crew will enjoy the added privacy too
>lonely freight train crews will enjoy the additional company
>can be outfitted as extra crew accommodation when not in revenue service
