I guess I shouldn't be surprised people read the special leaves thing as weed, but based on the one jacket and the MREs, I think it was intended to genuinely read that as mint leaves, like the plant. You can crush or pulp them and then put it on cuts, scrapes, and bug bites as a first aid measure. It's something an outdoorsy kid like Dess would find cool.
Plus, Revive Mints are a thing in game and the only feasible way to get past SWOON.

All the fan art and videos and whatever have made me feel like I'm losing it a bit, in a good way. This game really is just insanely fucking huge and I've seen the most incredibly well made fan stuff since this chapter released. It doesn't even need to really be canon, it just needs to be close enough that people go a bit further with it.
