I'm 15 episodes in and I'm finding it dull. There's no hook. Why should I care about these brooding "dark and mysterious" bishounen or the overarching conflict? Does it get better later?

So yesterday I finished replaying pic related and I have two questions.
1. Having only played this and about 2/3 of FM3, what's the general consensus on the series and what are the better installments of it?
2. Are there actually more deployment slots on the final mission than recruitable pilots or I somehow missed one? I had 16/17

So, what's next for the gundam? Ogata said that we might expect many announcements for the incoming 50s anniversary. Post your wildest ideas and suggestions.
