Not sure if this changed for the PC port, but you can call them in as reinforcements on literally the next turn (so if you fuck up and someone dies on turn 1 you can rescue them, call them in on turn 2 and then they spawns on turn 3).

Jann is based though, no significant debuffs + buff when near largo (who you always take anyway for the free command point) + chance to refill ammo = great lancer until you unlock the hidden character. Also I think his voice lines are pretty funny

It's a pretty fun game (t. beat it 3 times) although the DLC is disappointing. Unless you are a completionist you aren't missing out by just going through a single playthrough and ignoring the ranking system. If you are outgunned you can always do a bit of grinding via the skirmishes, just do the most recent one on easy for EZ money/xp.
Don't forget to visit the graveyard for a chance to buy orders, or to visit castlefront street because it's how you unlock potentials (the little traits on their profile) which are what makes your squad OP. The system is kinda hidden but basically you need to gain points by deploying them, having them kill one or more enemies, rescue fallen squadmates or capture camps. Once you have enough points you unlock one of their potentials the next time you visit castle street, rinse and repeat until all of them are unlocked.
The only exception are the main characters (Welkin, Alicia, Largo, Rosie) who you need to buy a report on and then you get access to a side mission. Complete it and they get their last potential, which range from BUSTED (Alicia) to pretty good (the rest).
PS: You can't 100% the game without playing through it twice so don't panic about missing shit
Anyway how was VC4? I tried to get into 2 but the setting and tiny maps turned me off.
