You only got in as an apprentice or something, and you were locked into the specific career path that school taught, and you often had to be the son or friend of a Guildmember to get in etc
The noblemen and rich taught their heirs by paying for private tutors.

The PUBLIC SCHOOLS came about as a place where upper middle classes - who couldn't afford private tutors but also wanted their children to get a more general education - could pay to send their children for education.
The PUBLIC part of it just meant that it was schooling aimed at the general public which the general public could attend. It wasn't explicitly restricted by profession.

That was centuries ago. Centuries before actual ''''free'''' state-funded education came about. When it did, those became known as STATE SCHOOLS.
