Need some advice on a computer desk I am trying to build, never done anything like this before so I don't want to screw it up. I bought a 6' x 25'' x 1.5'' butcher block. I then got some custom legs because all the ones on amazon looked like cheap shit that would break. The company I ordered them from told me "The holes are 5/16'' so most people use 1/4'' lag screws''.
Went down to the hardware store and bought a handful of them. But looking at them at home they look kind of small, you can see the picture of the legs there is a bit of space between where the legs would sit against the table. It seems to me that they would barely go into the wood. Am I just ignorant or should I have gotten ones that were longer? If so any specific length you think I should be aiming for?
Also any advice on doing it in general, I was planning on using a drill to make small holes and then use a socket wrench to screw them in. Does that sound like the right idea?

Locking duck quacking gag Archived /diy/
Would a locking gag that forces quacking be feasible? I'm thinking a simple duck whistle incorporated into one of those gags with a breathing hole.

Mostly looking for what kind of gag would be best. An o-ring or spider gag seems like a bad idea but something that fills your mouth would probably work! My concern is that breathing holes are likely too small to fix the whistle into. Worst case scenario maybe drilling through a ball gag?

Built A Batchelor Pad For Tyrone Archived /diy/
modus operandi: Ø currency invested, only reclaim & scrap from paying jobs used.

120cm x 90cm x 90cm

started at 9:30 this morning, finished at 14:30. It has an interesting assortment of materials. the two south posts were oak. I have no idea what they came from. the two north posts are cut from a single, broken, pressure treated post that was given to us by a Polish lady we sometimes trade with. the roof was framed in with one oak 1x4, two fir 2x4's and two fir 1x4's I only had to cut one of the 2x4's, the broken post, and the roof decking/FRP. everything else was oddly already a suitable length. the roof decking is 6.25mm plywood leftover from a window replacement job post-hailstorm. the white FRP is from a low-income housing bathroom remodel. the walls are from more temporary hailstorm window covers. all fasteners were leftover from a previous steel roof install and woodscrews were a combination of reclaim from salvage wood from the Polish lady, and some that were leftover from a framing job. 5 hours with a 30 min lunch break.

Tyrone is happy. he didn't even wait for me to finish the walls before he moved in. he's been living in full element exposure for the last 4 weeks since we removed him from the ewe pen. we will re-introduce him to his selected ewes for breeding on November 1st.

damn fine engineering, if you ask me. Archived /diy/
>Venice Was Not Built on Solid Ground...
>It was built on millions of wooden piles driven deep into the seabed.
Since the year 421 AD, this floating city has defied both time and engineering logic.
While most cities rise upon rock or concrete, Venice stands upon a submerged forest of timber.
Specifically, alder wood — a type that doesn’t rot underwater.
Buried in clay and soaked in saltwater, it doesn’t decay; it petrifies, turning harder and stronger over the centuries — almost as tough as stone.
>A timeless marvel that continues to support an entire city.
>The Campanile of St. Mark’s alone rests on 100,000 wooden piles —
each one hand-driven up to three meters deep into the lagoon floor.
>But why build a city on water?
>In the early 5th century, Italy was under siege by barbarian tribes.
>Fleeing from invasion, people sought refuge in the muddy marshes of the Venetian lagoon.
>The water became their wall — a natural fortress no army could easily cross.
>And so, amid the mud and mist, Venice was born.
>Not as a city that conquered nature —
>but as one that learned to live in harmony with it.
>Venice does not float by chance.
>It floats by ingenious design, necessity, and the enduring will of a story that refuses to sink.

1. Have you had any success with online cnc services?

2. Are those mini lathes any good? Valves are mostly made from aluminum or brass and delrin, but steel seems like a wiser choice for anything that would be bearing pressure.

My washer from the 90's failed and I dropped the timer (most expensive) while dissambling and figuring it out, causing it to break. Found another washer for free, works, better than nothing. But the amount of bullshit involved with it...
>No ability to set water level
>Put it on "deep water wash" but it still only fills half full
>Auto sensing
>Stops filling when you open the lid
>Won't spin at all with the lid open
What the fuck is this shit? I know how dirty it is, I know how much soap I put in, I know what I want. I set it to deep water wash, so fucking do it. Fill all the way goddamn it. It fills to half. Half. I said full, you stupid fuck. Occasionally end up filling it manually with a bucket.

Is this really how bad it's gotten? My old one had a dial. If you set it to full, it filled to full. Period. Very straightforward. You pull on the dial, it starts working. There was no start button. There was no auto sensing. It didn't do any of this shit. What the fuck is wrong with this world. I have no control over this thing and have to fight with it to have it doing what it needs to.

Beginner workbench? Archived /diy/
Hi, I'm a beginner and was good at woodworking in school, but unfortunately moved to a school without a shop when I was 15. Since then I have been pretty crafty and built and made all sorts of things, but never had the space for a shop.

While I'm still pretty limited in terms of budget, I have a nice space and some tools. Main ones being circular saw and a drill. I can afford to buy some more hand tools but not a table saw quite yet.

I want to eventually build some furniture (like picrel, it's made from acacia wdyt?), but first I suppose I need to build a workbench. Any ideas on what someone in my situation could build?
